Review Fix How-To Series: Styling Yourself Accordingly on a Budget

Style is something that is unique and inbreed, so everyone has style already. However, coming out of your house looking a hot mess, or looking like you just woke up and dressed in the dark can be your own expression, but if you’re not; you need a little help. Some people believe style is this over-the-top high fashion, expensive thing that you need money to get. Here are some tips on looking stylish, but not breaking your wallet at the same time.

1. Know that style is individual. No two persons have the same style. You may find someone who likes the same things, but how you accord and arrange it will be completely different. Look at the Olsen twins.

2. Get an idea on what kind of look fits you best. Take some old fashion magazines, look at ads, do some history on fashion and take notes and clippings of each. Get a little book going. The picture could be because you like the color, to the drapery of the fabric, to the model’s face. Anything.

3. Remember, if you managed to take a bunch of red carpet dress pictures, please keep in mind, these aren’t the actual wearer’s choice. The majority of the time, the celebrity or socialite had to wear that without option, so if you admire a celebrity’s wardrobe, look more on how they dress casually. These can be seen in OK!, US Weekly or People.

4. Don’t be afraid to pick up expensive fashion magazines. They most likely have what is in trend, and to be stylish, you need to have your own pick on things while remaining en vogue. For women, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar are excellent picks, and for men, Vogue Hommes International, VMAN and Numero Homme are excellent choices.

5. Shopping for beginners. Now when you finally gathered some things on what’s in trend, and what you like, go out. Now, you may have seen that Armani shirt in Vogue for $1150. Chances are, because it’s in style, somewhere else has it for cheaper. Specialty stores like Uniqlo, Topshop and H&M are famous for looking at designs of the higher-end market and duplicating them for a much cheaper price.

6. Know your sizes. That is crucial when it comes to styling. If you’re a guy, it’s important to know your waist, chest and hip sizes. So if you have a 32-inch waist, you wouldn’t look good in 30 slim jeans. And the same applies to women. To find your sizes have a friend use tape measure on those parts of the body.

7. Do not go to Saks or Barney’s. It’s not cute when you want something and can’t afford it. Then you get tempted. Then arrested. And then you really look like a hot mess.

8. For those of you that like high-end designer fashions, stores such as Filene’s, Century 21, and Loehmanns have designer collections for 85 percent off the regular retail. And a fashionista/o secret is, the further away from Manhattan the store is, the more higher-end options there are for cheaper.

9. Things to buy. Whatever store you choose, start off with three jeans, and about five tops, and women, maybe three dresses, and work them into different outfits. See the combinations you come up with, based on your own style and what’s trendy.

10. Black doesn’t go with everything. Black and white is classic. But black and neon colors do not mix. Never did, never will. But white does go with everything though, because white is a stand-off color.

11. Remember those notes and clips? When you’re getting dressed, look back at those clippings. See what was so special about your pictures. Maybe you liked how that male model wore his shirt? Or how Gisele Bündchen wore that hat? It’s okay to get inspired and take these ideas.

12. Look Good? Then if you’re satisfied with your look after a few weeks, some more fashionista/o secrets are: thrift shops. Thrift shops on the Upper East Side, Chelsea, Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg carry a lot of clothing usually high-end for a steal. Imagine a Burberry shirt for $5.99?

13. Is it really a good buy? The last thing to remember is: a bargain isn’t anything less than 30 percent off. And the infamous Nanny joke applies as well, “If it ain’t half-off, it ain’t on sale” is true.

Happy Shopping.
