Blasted Coffin Jockey
Episode Commentary: Yawn of the Dead
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that Dino Stamatopoulos’ “Morel Orel” was one of Adult Swim’s most underrated shows during it’s three-year run on the network.
Witty, charming and about the innocent days of youth, it’s comedy was suggestive, but hilarious nonetheless. This show has a completely different feel, as it forces you to embrace your most evil thoughts. That being said, you do have to have the mindset of a mad scientist to truly enjoy “Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole.”
Because if you don’t, replacing Michael Jackson’s bones with those of the Elephant Man just won’t have the same appeal.
With the main character being a parody of Kenneth Branagh, you know you’re in for an over the top and melodramatic performance and that’s exactly what you get in this debut episode. Aside from kicking his dead father numerous times, Victor Frankenstein helps someone else with daddy issues, one Blanket Jackson, reanimate his father, some 30 years after his death.
The only problem is, his father is incredibly upset at what his son has become.
Normal.
The end result is one of these losers with unsolved issues with their father gets some solace, but not the one you’d think.
Sure, it’s predictable, but it’s still funny.
The fact that Jacko’s voice is absurdly female helps matters too, as well as the stop-motion animation, which gives the show a look all it’s own and feel.
Because of this, with its unique premise, black humor and the writing of Stamatopoulos, this show looks to be a must-see show this summer.
