Episode Commentary: ‘A Man, A Plan’ or ‘Thank You, Jimmy Carter’

Bizarre. The word that comes to mind after Damon’s [Charlie Saxton] poetry reading during this episode of “Hung,” which leads into an even stranger situation when he gets wasted on a scone spiked with hi-grade pot and declares his love for former President Jimmy Carter.

If you’re still reading, that’s just the tip of the iceberg here.

When it’s all said and done, this episode is a worthwhile trip that continues to develop some more of the other characters in the show, giving “Hung” even more to build off of and makes the looming season finale perhaps the biggest romp on the show yet.

Much of that has to do with the work of Damon and Mr. Hunt.

If you’re not a fan of Saxton’s work on this show, it’s understandable why. Some of his early work on the show was a bit uneven, as he comes across as annoying. Now, he’s just misunderstood and totally one of kind, which of course, makes him redeemable and funny. Weird poetry readings aside, the kid has come a long way in just a season and a half on this show and is making the most of his time there.

Add in an extremely weird sex scene between Ann Heche and Eddie Jemison [who, from the way it is shot, looks like he has bigger breasts than Heche]and this episode is one of a kind.

Much like the first episode of this season’s “Entourage,” “Hung” bounced around a lot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was a bad episode. As a matter of fact, it might be the best episode this season,

It doesn’t necessarily start that way though.

The first scene features Gregg Henry, playing Mike Hunt and at first, you’re not won over by some of his lines, especially his pathetic self-loathing, but by the end of the episode, his antics make you a fan. Like a male Tanya, he’s quirky, lonely and weak, but has the marbles to do what makes himself happy.

Looks like he’s going to get his shot, even though it’s not by the most conventional of ways.

All this does is create even more possibilities of what crazy developments can occur on this show.
