What a Let Down

It was like waiting two weeks for Christmas morning only to wake up finding a big lump of coal in your stocking. True Blood’s season three finale was disappointing, to say the least. It wasn’t a terrible episode, but definitely wasn’t finale worthy.

The Russell saga was supposed to end stronger, possibly with an epic fight scene between him and Eric or Bill. However, it finished with his bacon-crisped body dropped into a vat of cement so he can dwell on his grief and conscience for a hundred years. That might sound cool, but it happened a little over half way through the episode, and if he doesn’t come back by next season to seek revenge, Russell will be the easiest antagonist to defeat in True Blood history.

After Russell was defeated, Bill attempted to bury Eric in the concrete vat, which backfired when Eric eventually found Bill at Sookie’s house. When Eric came back he revealed to Sookie that Bill who’s been clandestinely behind some of her attacks, only so he could appear to be a hero in her eyes. Sookie responded by revoking Bills invitation into her house, and ending their relationship. Whether or not they will get back together will be answered next season, but the past has shown that the two can’t be separated for long.

What the finale provided the most was a possible redeeming fourth season. It turns out Lafayette is dating a witch, which may be foreshadowing a larger witch role next year.

The episode ended with Sookie disappearing with some fairies into oblivion, so next season will answer exactly where she went.

So, this season was great but it ended poorly. True Blood has had it’s way of keeping itself distinguished to this point, but only next season will truly show if it can sustain it’s reputation for success, because this season really did end with a big let down.
