Steve Janowsky: The Review Fix Rocktologist: Bill Leverty Interview

Bill Leverty first burst on the rock music scene with his guitar work and songwriting talents as a founding member of Firehouse, whose 1991 hit “Love of a Lifetime” reached #5 on the charts and sold 500,000 copies. “Don’t Treat Me Bad,” “All She Wrote,” “Reach For The Sky” and “When I Look into Your Eyes” were other notable efforts by the group. In 1991 they also won the American Music Award for Best New Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band. Despite diminishing success in the rest of the decade stateside, the band gained a huge following in Thailand, Japan and Singapore and released new material throughout the ‘90s into the new millennium. Their “Rock Never Stops” tour featured other ‘80s bands. They still enjoy a busy touring schedule and will be releasing a CD of new versions of some of their old classics as well as a new album with brand new tunes.

Leverty has released “Wanderlust” (2004), Southern Exposure (2007) and his most recent effort “Deep South” (2009) finds this Richmond, Virginia native reinterpreting Southern traditional songs in a Rock and Country-Metal vein. Leverty plays most of the instruments on these tracks that originated in the late 19th and early 20th century (two are from a later period).

ReviewFix.com recently spoke to this supremely talented musician about the “Deep South” CD and its genesis, recording, Firehouse, his instruments of choice and top five guitarist list. It is an enlightening talk.
