A Workout Worthy of the NFL Name

There’s a chance there may not be a professional football season in 2012, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in shape for it.

Right?

With Electronic Arts’ “NFL Training Camp” for the Nintendo Wii, the secrets of the NFL conditioning program are presented in a way that makes them more accessible than ever before. While the game itself isn’t a perfect experience, it accomplishes its main objective.

It’ll get you into shape.

And you’ll have fun doing it.

The biggest and only real problem “NFL Training Camp” has is its ability to respond to your movements, especially if you’re not built like an average Joe. While shorter gamers should have no problem getting the most out of the game, if you’re over 6’4, you may need to adjust your wii sensor bar depending on the type of exercise you’re doing. At times it can get extremely frustrating repeating the same exercise a dozen times and not have the computer register it. For best results, stand at least 15 feet from the television. You may have gotten away with playing Wii Sports in a cramped room, but don’t expect to do it here.

However, this only is the case for the exercises that require the resistance bands. Everything else is intuitive and fun, especially the quarterback drills and running, which will improve your arm strength and your mobility. Regardless of the fact that it’s easy to cheat during these drills (waving your arm at the right time works just as good as throwing), those that take it seriously will find themselves improving their attributes in real life.

This game also features a comprehensive list of tools to help you manage your weight and calories burnt, that anyone that’s ever been on a weight-loss program will find extra helpful. The ranking system, which compares your times and stats with real NFL pros, also adds a level and depth to an already slick title.

In the end however, this title isn’t very different from the other fitness games on the system. Simply put, you have to stick with it to see results. Unlike a majority of the games on the Wii like this however, this one is easily the most engaging and fun.
