Hung Coverage: Cops and Hoes

Episode Commentary: We’re Golden or Crooks and Big Beaver

This week’s episode of “Hung” continued the show’s recent stretch of enjoyable TV by not messing with the formula enough to ruin a good thing.

The storylines involving Jessica, Jason and Lenore were all played with enough, but were ultimately toyed with, but for good reason.

Considering Ray’s current predicament, there were more pressing matters at hand.

On the surface, this could have been a disaster, but the writing team did something ingenious here; they had Ray find a way to play a part in Jessica’s storyline. This made the transition natural and not forced. What this also does is further that storyline to the point where we want to see what happens next week. Will Ray’s kids move in with him? Can Jessica handle the mounting pressure at work and in her personal life?

The hallmark of a good sitcom is having questions that beg to be answered. While “Hung is still a work in progress on that front, it’s getting there.

Throughout this entire episode, you wondered what was going to happen to Ray. Once Tanya got involved and tried to weasel her way out, the show was at its best. Jane Adams and Thomas Jane have an undeniable chemistry and their banter while handcuffed in the police car was hilarious. The end scene, which saw Tanya handcuffed to a pole on the pier while Ray got it on with Ana Ortiz’s character was also classic. But don’t let the laughter fool you; Tanya’s character is going through a transformation here. Quick to tell Ray she was the boss a few episodes ago, she sees the situation is quite different now. This sets up a future that is uncertain and most definitely sure to be drama-filled.

When was this the case last season?

With another solid episode under their belts, the writing team behind this show continues to prove that their success so far this season hasn’t been a fluke.
