Nintendo Manages to Climb After Initial 3D Fall

After a lack of initial titles at launch didn’t stop the Nintendo 3DS from selling 3.5 million units in its first month on the market, the company was forced to cut the cost of their pricey, yet flashy new handheld by 30 percent.

Ironically, it saved the console’s life.

In an article by IGN.com, editor Richard George breaks down the short, yet complicated history of the system and examines the many small moves that have both delayed the 3DS’ success and ultimately led to its reclaiming the portable crown it never actually lost.

Most of that has to due with Nintendo’s insistence to debut the handheld without a strong lineup of Nintendo titles, opting instead for a Nintendogs sequel and several other titles like Pilotwings 3D Resort, which felt more like a tech demo than a fully-fleshed out title.

But with a hearty helping of their top franchises on the way or already released for the holiday season, including The New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart 7 and Pokemon, Nintendo is in the driver’s seat once again.
