Pretty Little Liars Breaks Twitter Record

It wasn’t the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars, The Voice or even Fashion Star… it was Pretty Little Liars that broke a Twitter record.

Yes, that show on that “kiddie” network.

Even if you don’t watch it or even if you do and don’t want to admit it, PLL is a huge hit, averaging four million viewers per episode. Whether you’re 12, 25, 35 or older, PLL is the best guilty pleasure that has come along in a long time. Yes, even this writer is a huge fan and not afraid to admit it. In fact, millions of people aren’t afraid to admit it.

More than 645,000 people tweeted about the show during “unmAsked,” the hour-long second season finale. That’s 32,000 tweets per minute. During the next 24 hours, 1.6 million tweets were sent by 667,000 users. More than that, five of the top Twitter trends on Monday were about the show—Ezra, Garrett and Melissa, Spencer, Mona or Jenna, and Black Swan.

“We’ve been tracking tweets about television shows and events for several years, and this is one of the biggest hours of TV on Twitter we’ve ever seen,” said Jenn Deering Davis, founder of TweetReach. “Pretty Little Liars is consistently among the most active shows we track, and [Monday] night’s finale eclipsed the show’s previous high of 289,000 tweets during one show.”

Based on Sara Shepard’s book of the same name, the ABC Family show focuses on four high school girls, Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), Hannah Marin (Ashley Benson) and Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), who are being haunted by “A” through text messages. “A” knows all of their secrets and uses said secrets to manipulate the four friends after the death of their best friend Alison DeLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse).

Monday night came the cliffhanger end to the second season where “A” was finally revealed to be the self-absorbed, socialite wannabe Mona Vanderwall (Janel Parrish). During finale, Mona survives falling down the side of a mountain (unlike the books where she dies) after a fight with Spencer after Mona almost kills them driving recklessly along the mountain. Fortunately, she just turns out to be batsh-t crazy and is locked up in a mental institution.

“A”/ Mona/ Janel appeared on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to discuss some of the finer details of the finale and season three, which will fast forward six months in the future.

“Season three is going to be explanations. We’ve answered some questions, but we’ve also raised more,” Parrish told Seacrest. “So, season three will be about putting all the pieces together, finding out who’s all involved, how Mona pulled things off, who she’s talking to in the hospital, all those things. That’s what season three is going to be all about, finding out what ‘A’ Team is, who all is involved.”

Well, we won’t have to wait for too long to find out more little dirty secrets. Season three of Pretty Little Liars premieres Tuesday, June 5 at 8 p.m./ 7 p.m. CST on ABC Family.
