Justin Timberlake ‘Suit and Tie’ Review: Welcome Back

Justin Timberlake is one of pop’s biggest stars; a chart-topper, a music genius. He’s been out of the music scene for quite some time, but has still kept us interested with his shift into acting in movies like “In Time” and “Friends with Benefits.” He’s sold millions of albums and singles worldwide, both as a solo artist and a former member of 90’s group ‘N Sync. After several years, he’s returned to the world of music. And how else to show a meteroric return to the scene? A hot new single, of course. And it was worth the wait.

The single, “Suit and Tie,” is the perfect comeback single. With elements of pop and R&B, the song opens slow, the typical JT way, but wastes no time getting back to basics as JT winds into the first verse with quick skill, with his falsetto voice spilling over the lyrics and tempo like silk on skin, which leaves one satisfied, ready to enjoy.

The song, simply about maturity by all means, being suave and sexy, is funky and hip, and makes you dance as JT serenades (seriously, its like he’s cooing) you with words of anticipation and possesion, carelessness and power. You can almost feel the ego as JT repeats the hook, “let me show you a few things, show you a few things about love,” which lets you know the scene at hand.

What else can you add to a song that has sexy lyrics and a feel good beat? A skinny dip into hip hop. A break from the luxe vibes and in comes hip-hop titan Jay-Z, stage left. The smooth, bad boy image is hyped up a notch as Jay steps up against the slowed down tempo, no doubt so you can listen to the bars he lays down as he offers a taste of ‘the life,” of celebrity. And in comes JT to finish up with a bridge leading out into the instrumentals, a quirky, cute sound that grinds against the nature of the song.

The single itself is long overdue, and couldn’t have come at a better time. In an era where it’s not hard to make a song anymore, yet few can make decent music, in steps veteran artists like Timberlake, who know howto entertain to show the newbies in the music world how it’s done, how to make subtle, not so explicit tunes that any generation can listen to.

The single is off of Timberlake’s upcoming third album, “The 20/20 Experience,” which includes production by Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke and Timbaland, to name a few. The single was released on January 14 and is available on iTunes.
