Review Fix Exclusive: Marc Koprinarov Talks ‘American Nature’ Deluxe Comic Book

Review Fix chats with comic book writer Marc Koprinarov, who discusses the Kickstarter behind his wild “American Nature” deluxe comic book.

The series originally began as a monthly backup feature in Image Comic’s Hoax Hunters, but is now expanding with the help of Bogus Books. American Nature Presents features the work of emerging and established talents such as Steve Seeley (Hoax Hunters/Hack Slash Son of Samhain), Austin Tinius and Robert Salinas (Doctor Muscles), Antonio Brandao, Zé Burnay (Witch Gauntlet), Ralph Niese(Noble Causes), Benjamin Marra(Blades and Lazers) and, of course, the American Nature crew of Dave Landsberger, Koprinarov and Greg & Fake.

Review Fix: What was the inspiration for this project?

Marc Koprinarov: After doing over a years worth of two page backups in Image Comics’ Hoax Hunters, we decided it was time to expand in length and start telling the full Beef Jams story. But just like Mike and Steve from Hoax Hunters, we wanted to bring along some friends too.

Review Fix: How did you get all of these artists together?

Koprinarov: We matched with all of them on Tinder. One thing led to another, restraining orders were filed, restraining orders were lifted, and the next thing you know, we are making a funnybook.

Review Fix: How do you want this series to affect people?

Koprinarov: If left to our own devices, our only goal would be to make people laugh, or at the very least crack a smile.  But with this project involving a variety of artists and stories, ranging from humor, to time travel to the supernatural, we hope that the effect is akin to having all of your itches scratched at once. Basically, we are trying to accommodate all the needs of your average hedonist.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy it the most?

Koprinarov: Blind old white men who make more than 500k a year. Soccer moms with limps from age old bobsled accidents. Indonesian factory workers. Bank robbers. Millenials. Astronauts. People stationed at oil refineries in the middle of the ocean. Prisoners in solitary confinement.

Honestly, probably anyone who likes to laugh or look at vivid colors. Real talk.

Review Fix: What do you think is the series’ most redeeming quality?

Koprinarov: We are like Kanye West’s antithesis. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. That should be refreshing in a day and age where everything is so damn serious.

Review Fix: Away from the cash needed to fund it, what are your other goals for the project?

Koprinarov: We want to get our work into the hands of people who have not yet seen it. The people that do read and enjoy what we do are fantastic, vocal and supportive. We love them. But there is a lot of untapped potential out there. A lot of people we haven’t made laugh yet.

Review Fix: Can you discuss some of the rewards? What makes them different from other Kickstarters?

Koprinarov: Most of the rewards are pretty straight forward. We’ve got a great product at a great price. $24 for a comic, a 7” record with new music from Kleenex Girl Wonder and The Hood Internet and your choice of one of three shirts from Burger and Friends. The basic package should be enough to satisfy anyone’s craving.

But for the true connoisseur, we are offering much, much more. Get as many shirts as you want, we’ve got you covered. For only three extra dollars, Marc and Dave will write you personalized hate mail on official American Nature stationary. Want one of Greg and Fake’s famous cardboard commissions? It can be yours! For the first time ever original pages of Greg and Fake’s Beef Jams art are available to the art buying public. We’ll even send you a garbage bag full of at least 33 Greg and Fake cardboard paintings, if that’s what you really want. All that and more!

Review Fix: Bottom Line, Why Should someone contribute to this project?

Koprinarov: If you look at our Kickstarter page and every one of your senses is overwhelmed with waves of pleasure and ecstasy, then by all means buy it and tell all your friends about it. Otherwise, feel free to continue scouring the interwebs for pictures of kittens or whatever.

Anyone who contributes will get back as much as they put in. We are making it worth everyone’s while.
