Sons of Anarchy Episode Commentary: ‘Smoke Em If You Got Em’

This episode of Sons of Anarchy was definitely a bizarre one.

The way it was shot and the different camera angles used were definitely unique, thanks to Guy Ferland, who directed this episode. The first half hour was an absolute snooze fest, as Samcro headed back to their old place of business, TM. There was subtle dialogue between Jax and crew, also Bobby and Wendy shared a nice scene together where they bonded. Unlike other SOA episodes, there was no montage towards the end.

Another slap to the face from Kurt Sutter, will Tara’s truth finally be exposed? Because of the different feel and lack of real action, this episode was by far the weakest so far this season.

“Smoke em If You Got Em” was slow-paced to say the very least. Aside from Jax and Tully’s White Supremacist crew’s reenactment of a high school brawl, the action was extremely limited. Now that Lin is locked up and has threatened to give up the MC, Jax has made some new alliances with the Grim Bastards and The Mayans. Regardless of their newfound stability, Samcro still has another enemy they want to dispose of, August Marks. While several favors were done in a gruesome fashion that involved a pile of bodies in the back of a van to gain trust, most of this episode seemed like a repetitive plot line that will lead to more buildup for the remainder of the season.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
