Review Fix Exclusive: Jerome Bodin Talks ‘Heroes & Legends: Conquerors of Kolhar’ on Mobile Devices

Review Fix chats with Jerome Bodin, game designer and owner of Cuve Games, who discusses the port of his RPG “Heroes & Legends: Conquerors of Kolhar,” a joint venture with Phoenix Online Studios on mobile devices. An old-school J-RPG and a customization-heavy adventure, Bodin believes it’s different from many other tablet adventures currently available.

Review Fix: What was the reception like to the original game? Did it help influence the mobile version?

Jerome Bodin: The reception was how we expected it, and at that time the game was already almost ready for mobile so it didn’t influence the mobile version that much.

Review Fix: How is this version of the game different from the original?

Bodin: It’s globally a straight porting of the desktop version for mobile devices. In the first version, we had already mobile controls in mind, that’s why we kept the controls and interface as clear and simple as possible. Desktop user could enjoy this simplicity with their mouse, and it made the porting really straight-forward.

Review Fix: What changes under the hood had to be made in order to get this to mobile?

Bodin: Actually the game was originally thought to be polyvalent, we had the touch control scheme in mind while developing, so in the end, with the help of our engine Unity, making the game work on mobile wasn’t really an issue. We just had to make sure the touch controls were working fine.

Review Fix: How well do you think it translates to the mobile gaming scene?

Bodin: Again it was thought to work eventually on mobile, so on the design side I think it fits pretty well. I don’t think this genre of game is seen often on the mobile shops so I hope the audience will enjoy something a bit different. We thought about H&L cross-platform from the start. It’s simple and clear. The gameplay and the controls are easy to catch. The game sessions are pretty short, so it’s perfect if you want to grind the game on desktop or simply have a quick session while traveling.

Review Fix: Why should someone pick this up if they own it already on the PC?

Bodin: Because it’s nice to enjoy your game comfortably sit in your couch, with your tablet.  More seriously, this game  is crafted for J-RPG tactics lovers, and again I think there’s not so much out there for them if they want a quick game play on the go, so I hope H&L will fill this hole a little.
