Review Fix Exclusive: Julie Haddon Talks Scribd and Marvel Comics Partnership

Review Fix chats with Julie Haddon, VP of Editorial and Marketing at Scribd, who breaks down the new partnership between Scribd and Marvel Comics which brings thousands of classic comics, including access to hundreds of Marvel’s collected editions starring Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, the Hulk, and more to the subscription-based reading and audio book service.

Review Fix: How does this new agreement with Marvel change the way Scribd does business?

Julie Haddon: We’re keeping the same $8.99 flat monthly fee; we’re just adding even more value with the addition of over 10,000 comics for our subscribers. Scribd now includes more than one million titles and is the first service to offer e-books, comics and audiobooks all under one roof.

Review Fix: How did the agreement come to be? Who reached out to who? What was the process like?

Haddon: This is something we’ve been thinking about for quite some time. It was important from a product perspective to build an experience comic book fans would love. From a content perspective, we started approaching publishers last year and quite a few were eager to sign on early. We’ll be working to sign even more deals and add additional titles in the coming weeks and months.

Review Fix: How do both companies benefit?

Haddon: From the publishers perspective, we’re introducing their works to a whole new audience resulting in an all-new revenue stream.  As for us, we’re able to offer an even more expansive library of work to our readers and appeal to book lovers, comics fans, and readers who may enjoy both.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the new partnership?

Haddon: We think there’s a huge opportunity to help even more people discover and love comics. Whether existing fans want to go back and binge read their favorites or new fans want to discover the story behind Spider-Man before they see him on the big screen, we’re able to appeal to both, unique audiences.

Review Fix:  Bottom line, why should a comic fan be excited about this?

Haddon: Comic fans are some of the most voracious and passionate readers around. We all have our prized collections and that wont change. What is unique is that now we have the opportunity to browse and discover like never before, all for one flat monthly fee. The unlimited, cross-publisher access to titles from Marvel, IDW, Top Shelf, Boom Studios, Dynamite, and more is unprecedented. What’s more, your subscription also gets you access to our massive book and audiobook collections, so you can binge on books as well as comics.  To put it simply, there’s something for every comics fan.
