Ironfall: Invasion Review: Great Multiplayer, Little Else

The closest thing 3DS owners will have to a “Gears of War” multiplayer experience.

If you’ve ever wanted a third-person shooter in the vein of “Gears of War” on the Nintendo 3DS, meet “IronFall: Invasion,” a run of the mill shooter that plays well enough, but lacks a real soul. Add in the control (if you don’t have a new 3DS or one equipped with a Circle Pad Pro) issues and at times, ugly visuals and it’s enough to keep most gamers away.

However, if you’re feening for a shooter experience, and more mature one at that, with cursing and plenty of bodies to hunt down- and have a few friends willing to partake in the experience, you can and will get some satisfaction out of “Ironfall: Invasion.”

Many of the game’s problems have to do with the lackluster story and by the numbers approach to gameplay. While it does look decent during gameplay and even better on the updated 3D on the new Nintendo 3DS XL, the cut-scenes are dreadful.

The story is also so generic that, right out of the box, it’s hard to continue playing. There’s nothing really cool about the characters and the story. It’s extremely vanilla. With mediocre graphics and a boring story, many gamers won’t give this more than 20 minutes of their time.

Once the action starts as well, the enemy A.I. also hurts the experience. On one occasion, an enemy crouched at the bottom of a staircase and stayed there, while the gamer was a few steps above it, making for an easy kill. Instances like this happened far too often during the single-player campaign for it to be taken seriously.
