Review Fix chats with Grammy-nominated Pianist, composer and recording artist Laura Sullivan, who discusses her new video “900 Voices.”

Just the ninth female musician to be nominated for a Grammy in the New Age Album category in 27 years, Sullivan is a leader in the New Age revolution and definitely an artist worth keeping an eye on.

Watch the video for “900 Voices” below:

Review Fix: Why is this song special?

Laura Sullivan: The song “We Are Love” was written especially for the project that became the music video, “900 Voices.” It is a very special song because it was sung by 938 people from all over the world who participated in the creation by recording themselves singing the song and sending it to me. Some of them sang in their native language, and the final mix of the song contains 27 languages. The song is about love, unity and our connection as humanity.

Review Fix: What was the creation process like for the video?

Sullivan: The creation process for the video was very difficult. Most of the participants sent me multiple videos, and because of that there were more than 1000 videos that needed to be downloaded, watched and selected for the final mix. The audio was extracted from each video and tuned and then brought into ProTools to mix with the underlying music. Great care was taken to keep the audio in the same place as the video of the same person singing, and this was sometimes extremely difficult. The final mix and video edit took several months to complete.

Review Fix: What inspires you to write?

Sullivan: I am inspired by events in my everyday life. Like anyone, my life is filled with emotional experiences. Even the simplest things can bring up deep gratitude and feelings of love and these are my favorite things to celebrate through musical creation. I believe all artistic endeavor is a process of allowing the artistic expression to come through us, and this comes as a gift from divine energy.

Review Fix: How do you think it made you a better musician?

Sullivan: I think I learn something from every new production, and that does make me a better musician. This was an extremely collaborative process, more extreme than any other that I’ve ever been involved with, by far. I always learn from collaborative experiences because everyone brings their own special energy and talents and these transform the music in ways that wouldn’t come about if it was only myself that was involved. I think I learned a lot more about collaboration than I ever have through the experience of creating 900 Voices, and this is very valuable and something that will continue to help me be a better musician as I continue my journey.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of the year?

Sullivan: Giving birth to lots and lots more music. As much as I possibly can, but at a pace where I do an excellent job, without rushing. If I’m lucky enough for any future awards to be in the works, that will just be icing on the cake. It’s truly a gift to be able to be a musician and to have the opportunity to create. I can’t imagine anything that could be more fun.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Sullivan: I don’t know exactly what my next project will be. At this point, I’m doing all I can to get the word out about “900 Voices” and that is a full-time job. Once I feel I’ve shared it fully, then I’ll move on to another project. I’ve found that I do my best work when I completely focus my energy on one thing. So at this point, I haven’t even thought about the future.

Review Fix: How do you want this song to be remembered?

Sullivan: I would like this song to be remembered as more than just a song, but a work of art that is symbolic of our deep connection as humanity. The title of the song “We Are Love” has profound spiritual meaning. Many people have told me that watching the video and hearing the song brings them to tears, and this is my experience as well. I want the song to be remembered as a powerful celebration of a wonderful truth that is so important for all of us to hold on to, always.
