ITTY BITTY COMICS: THE MASK #1 Review: Fun

Although it’s a bit confusing to connect the dots of the multi-layered plot behind Itty Bitty’s “The Mask,” the cute story eventually ties together and thanks to its “Chalk Zone” inspired visuals, it’s a comic book series that works well for both kids and adults.

It starts off a bit like “The Hot Chick.” Herman, a zoo keeper, goes to the Magic Store Depot to find an anniversary gift for his wife and comes across an item the owner says he cannot have. Taking it anyway, it falls into many hands and causes many problems only to ever happen in a comic such as this. Bringing on many adventures and new characters, this comic is pure enjoyment. Follow The Mask as it ends up with Grandma, the Mayor, at the zoo and even aliens from outer space.

Art Baltazar and Franco create a kid-friendly environment in both the writing and art. The crayon-shaded skies and cartoony characters emphasize the comic book action words that pop from the page, perfect for even the smallest readers. Now don’t worry, Mom and Dad, you won’t be bored either- the humor used will entertain the entire family, great for bedtime or to spend time together on a rainy day.

In terms of story, it’s easy to just jump right in. From the beginning, Herman isn’t a good listener and the story overemphasizes what can go wrong when someone does not listen. Keep a lookout for the little old man in the purple shirt who comes in and out of the story to get the mask back to the shop.

All in all, Itty Bitty’s “The Mask” is the perfect start to introduce a little one to the comic book world thanks to a simple premise and illustrations that capture the eye. The kid-friendly humor and colorful chapters will open them up to a new and fun way to read. By the end of it all, there’s only one thing left to ask yourself, “Who’s that Masked Man?”
