Creepy Presents: Alex Toth Review: An Amazing Collection

Dark Horse Comic’s two longest running comic book collections are “Creepy” and “Eerie.” Throughout the years, these two collections have given birth to some great talent. One of them is artist Alex Toth. To honor this artist, Dark Horse has made “Creepy Presents: Alex Toth,” a collection of Toth’s best work and it’s an interesting read.

Toth’s artwork is summarized in one word: black. This may be the default look of “Creepy” and “Eerie,” but Toth takes black to a whole new level. There are comics (like “Grave Undertaking”) where Toth uses black in a rather ingenious way. Here, the comic is supposed to be very dark with tons of shadows. He makes the comic as dark and shadowy as possible. This makes the comic creepier than it should be, and that’s fine.

As the stories come along, Toth showcases that he has the talent to work with any genre. Be it straight horror, science fiction or noir Toth’s art brings out the best that each of these genres has to give.

The stories themselves range in quality, however. The best stories here ones with science fiction elements to them. The horror stories range from decent to not worth the paper they’re written on. The noir stories are straight up noir with little deviation in how they’re told. They’re not terrible, but they’re also not spectacular.

This is actually a smart move on Dark Horses part. By making compilations based on certain artists/writers, Dark Horse is allowing the general public to get to know their work better. This also helps Dark Horse is that they are showing they care about their artists and want to help them get their name out there.

“Creepy Presents: Alex Toth” is a great showcase of a great artist’s work. It shows different aspects of an artist’s style and the stories he helped bring to life. There should be more of these.
