Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 1: Initial Thoughts

“Minecraft: Story Mode” is a bold game. The marriage between Telltale’s award-winning storytelling and Mojang’s renowned “Minecraft” universe could have ended poorly. A perfect balance was needed to make this work.

And Telltale and Mojang are hitting the nail right on the head.

After playing through the first two chapters of “Episode 1: The Order of the Stone” as both a male and female, clicking through different decisions,, there’s no doubt “Minecraft: Story Mode” is on the right track.

The voice cast is excellent. Both Patton Oswalt and Catherine Taber successfully highlight Jesse’s nerdy nature and loyalty, especially to his or her best friend Reuben — an adorable “Minecraft” pig. A ton of prominent voice actors appear here and there, and they play their polygonal companions admirably.

Dealing with a family friendly game such as “Minecraft,” Telltale’s approach had to be a bit different from its usual angles. The dialogue is light and normally funny; however, this doesn’t mean your decisions don’t hold any weight. Sure, there won’t be any walker attacks or dead princesses, but you quickly get invested in the characters, encouraging you to make the best decisions for them.

“Episode 1” is off to a great start, and it proves that Telltale can manage a family oriented game without losing its heart.
