Review Fix Exclusive: Nick Santa Maria Talks ‘Real Men’

Review Fix chats with writer and actor Nick Santa Maria, who discusses his role in “Real Men.” Breaking down the inspiration behind the production, as well as his goals for it, Santa Maria lets us know the show has progressed and how its New York City debut is a bold new step for the production.

About ‘Real Men’:

Michael Catalano & David Silberg will bring some masculine-fueled joy to midtown this holiday season, with the new award-winning musical comedy, REAL MEN: The Musical . The show will play at New World Stages (340 W 50 Street) and has been called“A hilarious romp through manhood” by Examiner.com. Written by Paul Louis and Nick Santa Maria and directed by David Arisco with musical direction by Martin Landry and arrangements by Manny Schvartzman, REAL MEN began performances on November 12, opening December 10 and will initially run through January 2, 2016. Tickets are $59-$79 and can be purchased by calling 212.239.6200 or visiting Telecharge.com.

All men are schmucks who struggle with their daily existence. REAL MEN: The Musical follows that existence down Manhood Lane to gain some clarity, or at the very least, explore the common bond that all men are morons just trying to get by. REAL MEN is a 90-minute romp that delves into fatherhood, mid-life crisis, dating, marriage, potency, and sexuality.

Review Fix: What inspired this production?

Nick Santa Maria: Retirement. Paul and me are not kids.  One day we were talking on the phone and we decided to write a show in the hopes that it would take care of us in our old age.  We knew it was a longshot…but we’ve premiered in Miami, followed up with a production in Los Angeles, and now we’re playing off-Broadway, in the best off-Broadway theater (New World Stages), and we’ve collected some of the best reviews I’ve ever seen.  We just might reach our goal.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy it the most?

Santa Maria: We’ve played this show for everyone from 16 to 95…and they have all loved it.  We’re very fortunate in that sense.

Review Fix: What makes this production different?

Santa Maria: It’s about men.  There are so many musicals about women and their lives (MENOPAUSE, DIVORCE PARTY. THE WONDERETTES, etc.  This is for guys, and the women who put up with them.  The funny thing is that women love it just as much as the men do.

Review Fix: How do you want it to affect people?

Santa Maria: We’re hoping that men, and women see themselves and their partners in our songs and sketches.  We feel we’ve written an honest representation of modern life and how it affects us.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone check it out?

Santa Maria: It’s gut busting funny…and it’s also quite touching.  So many have told us that they laughed and cried.  We like that.  Come see us.  You’ll be glad you did.
