The Immortal #2 Review: Much Improved

Bounty hunters, aliens and a plot so big it takes a galaxy to hold it all in. That’s what we in Darryl Knickrehm’s “The Immortal #2” where we continue the adventures of bounty hunter Z. All readers hoping for some type of improvement will glad that there is some progress done.

Z has once again been regenerated after getting killed again. Unfazed, he continues his search of answers including who put out the bounty he was chasing. What he finds out turns out to be a bigger plan than what he got himself into.

One thing’s for sure, the storytelling in this issue is much improved than the previous issue. The story flows a lot more naturally here, and we find out more about this world. Z is also a lot more interesting character here as we get deeper into his personality. What’s best, we learn more about bounty hunters in this world, and the end result is a lot more satisfying than many stories that have bounty hunters.

Sadly, the art is still a little wonky. There are plenty of places that show off Knickrehm’s talent though these moments are more along the lines of portraits. He can do detail and has an eye for character. The problems arrive when it comes to movement and non-human designs. The characters don’t look like they move naturally at all; They look more like robots imitating what they think a flesh and bone being moves.

The aliens once again look pretty generic. If you’ve read or watched any other sci-fi then you’d recognize these alien designs. Knickrehm shows that he has the imagination, but these designs just don’t come out.

“The Immortal #2” shows improvements in storytelling to the point where you want to see what happens next. Z actually is interesting here, as are the circumstances he gets himself in and the world. The art is the real problem here with some real talent hidden beneath mediocre comic book drawing.
