Review Fix Exclusive: Down & Outlaws’ Peter Danzig Talks ‘Above Snakes’

Review Fix chats with the Down & Outlaws Peter Danzig, who discusses their new album “Above Snakes,” breaking down their sound and goals for the future along the way.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Peter Danzig: Chris and I are brothers and we’d been renting out a practice space from Kyle and Jon’s band. Eventually both of our bands dissolved and we started Down and Outlaws.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Danzig: Our process is generally very collective. Songs are usually built up from a riff or melody that’s brought to the table. Once we figure out what feels right for the vibe of the song, we add parts and see where it takes us.

Review Fix: What was recording like?

Danzig: We recorded ‘Above Snakes’ in a week at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA. The experience was great. None of us had ever been able to be totally submerged in a recording process with no distractions for that amount of time. John Lousteau produced the record and became like a fifth member of the band during its production.

Review Fix: What’ inspired “I Don’t Care”? How was it written?

Danzig: ‘I Don’t Care’ is a song about being so caught up with one particular thing that you stop caring about everything else. Tunnel vision to the point of obsession. I had written lyrics and the initial guitar groove but when we started to play it as a band we came up with the ‘drop out’ style of chorus and everything else, which really made it what it is.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2016?

Danzig: We’re planning on touring as much as possible to bring this record to as many people as we can. We have dates across California in July as well as Outside Lands and Echo Park Rising in August to start.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Danzig: I’d like our music to be cathartic for people. All the songs are written about something that meant a great deal to us at one point or another and the music carries that energy with it. If people can be inspired to feel a certain way by our songs, I’d be happy they were.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Danzig: I think I’ll go pet my roommate’s dog and get ready for more music.
