Review Fix Exclusive: Inside ‘Attack of the Mutant Fishcrows’

Review Fix chats with game developer Ricky Wild, who discusses his upcoming game, “Attack of the Mutant Fishcrows.” Inspired by pixel art and Super Mario World, the game is a retro gem but packs in some wicked challenge and plenty of laughs.

Review Fix: What games inspired this one?

Ricky Wild: This is my first game, so I wanted to go with the vibe of one of the first games I played and loved, Super Mario World (SNES)

Review Fix: Lets talk about the art. What inspired that?

Wild: Pixel art has charm when used correctly and it’s something I grew up seeing in video games. I wanted this title to use that art style but with its own charm, dark and colorful.

Review Fix: What has development been like?

Wild: It’s been fun for the most part, it’s definitely come with it’s challenges which I have embraced. I find programming keeps your mind sharp, there’s a lot of problem solving involved in the process.

Review Fix: With all the competition on the mobile market and in the indies now, how difficult was it for you guys to try and make something that stood out?

Wild: I knew straight away when starting this title, it would stand out for sure. It’s very odd and different to what’s circulating right now. Yes the market is over saturated with games but i’m in this because I enjoy it, so that was never important to me when I began the project. I’m a one man team, so I have complete creative freedom and no worries. The title will available for PC, MAC, Linux,Steam and hopefully some console platforms that are TBA. This isn’t being built for mobile.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why must someone play this game?

Wild: It’s different, funny, will be dark at times and it will challenge you. As of right now, it’s very early in development and has so much more to go before completion, so it’s difficult to say.

Review Fix: How do you want this game to be remembered?

Wild: Bottom line is, i want it to be a challenging and fun experience. So that’d be cool if the end product delivered that. Everyone is different though, what i believe to be challenging and fun may differ greatly for others. People will remember it as they please and that’s fine.

Review Fix: What are your goals for this game?

Wild: My goal is to push the player throughout the world, with the sense of constant looming danger over his/her trail.

Imagine countless variations of the enemy, that all pose their own unique threat to the player, always challenging and pushing you through environments, that themselves will challenge as you progress.

You are surviving as you go along, you’ll gain items that will aid you on your adventure, help or hinder others on your travels, boss fights and ultimately stop the one that has brought this chaos upon the world.

This will get more difficult to achieve the longer you take to do it. If I can encapsulate this into a video game, then my goal has been achieved.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Wild: I have a few ideas. One in particular I’d like to give a go to would be an isometric Zelda – like game, with some features that’d make it stand out from the others. Right now I’m focused on this title.

Review Fix: Anything else you want to say?

Wild: If you like the look or sound of this, follow me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/wildlogicgames the game is sure to evolve into so much more, so keep up to date.
