Review Fix Exclusive: Terra Lightfoot Talks New LP And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Terra Lightfoot discusses her new LP and video for “All Alone,” breaking down her creative influences and goals for 2017 along the way.

Review Fix: What makes this LP a special one?

Terra Lightfoot: This one was special because of the people I got to make it with. The producers (Gus van Go and Werner F.) really brought the best performances out of myself and the band, and we worked to create what we all felt was a great record — something I could be proud of when I’m old.

Review Fix: How is it different from your first release?

Terra Lightfoot: I love soul music, I love rock music, and I think this record is allowing the band and I to put on a pretty wild show when we play. The songs allow for us to get a little bit crazy and I really enjoy that aspect of performing live.

Review Fix: What inspired “All Alone”?

Terra Lightfoot: “All Alone” was the first song I wrote without inspiration from personal experience. I was really happy in love at the time, and I decided I needed to figure out how to write from another place even though personally I was in a state of bliss. So I wrote a song from the perspective of a spurned lover in an empty old house.

Review Fix: Who are some musicians that inspire your style?

Terra Lightfoot: I have a great respect for music that has stood the test of time. Right now I’m pretty into Elizabeth Cotton, Lightnin’ Slim, I’m always into T. Rex. And on the festival circuit this past year, I ran into a lot of artists I loved watching – Matt Andersen, John Moreland, Frazey Ford, Basia Bulat, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer… people who sing with a lot of soul.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Terra Lightfoot: If I can write about my own experiences and have other people understand or relate to that and get something from it, that’s my goal. I’m a pretty emotional person and became more attuned that way after I started to play music for a living, I realized that making emotional connections with people is basically what makes me tick.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Terra Lightfoot: Tour, tour, tour. More shows in the US and Canada, I’ll be going back to Europe for more live dates, and hopefully heading to Australia as well. I love the road.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Terra Lightfoot: I’m going on a trip to Memphis and Nashville to do some songwriting, then celebrating holidays with my family… and then spending some quality alone time in nature preparing for a busy 2017.
