Review Fix Exclusive: Red Porch Kid Talks New Album, Goals for 2017 And More

Review Fix chats with Red Porch Kid, who discusses his new album, “Rocketship,” as well as his goals for 2017.

About Red Porch Kid:

About Red Porch Kid/Michael Stovall: A founding member of the band Jackson Jones (which disbanded in 2008), Stovall released a solo debut under his own name in 2014 titled Georgia. Tony Keefer of The Music Room called it “a true work of art… if David Gray came from Muscle Shoals, I believe he would sound a lot like Michael Stovall”. And American Songwriter spotlighted the song “Katie” from the record. Rocketship is his debut under the moniker Red Porch Kid.

Review Fix: What makes this album special?

Red Porch Kid: I think this album is very special to me, simply because it consumed so much of me while I was making it. I had an idea of what would go into writing and producing the record beforehand, but the engineering and mixing was a whole other thing. I didn’t have great recording equipment and I didn’t have a very large recording space. There were days where I wanted to just scrap the entire thing because it was too difficult for me to juggle all of the different aspects of the recordings. Now that it’s finished, I have a great sense of pride knowing that I accomplished what I set out to do.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Red Porch Kid: My creative process usually comes in short bursts. The majority of my songs are written very quickly. I have to make sure I can capture those little moments when they come. Most everything starts with a guitar, then branches out.

Review Fix: How was “Good Heart” written?

Red Porch Kid: Good Heart was certainly one of the songs that came to me very quickly. I had the guitar part sitting around for a few days, and I just started tossing around the idea of what it means to be a good person. It may sound like a song about love gone bad, but I always viewed it more as a song of reassurance.

Review Fix: Away from “Good Heart,” what’s your standout song on the album? How was it written?

Red Porch Kid: That’s a tough one, since all of the songs have a special place for me. Currently, I would say my favorite song on the record is “Minor Hill.” I had this reverb guitar part that I was messing around with, and I wrote the lyrics for it in less than an hour. The whole song just seemed to come together just right. It’s one of the highlights of the record in my opinion.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Red Porch Kid: My main goal for 2017 is to try and get this music out to as many people as possible. I’m also in the process of producing a couple of different records right now, so I certainly want to continue working on ideas and projects with different artists.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Red Porch Kid: That’s a great question, and it’s one that I really don’t know the answer. I know what this record means to me, but I hope people will give it an honest listen and decide what it means to them.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Red Porch Kid: We’re working on tour dates for early 2017. Of course, I also want to finish up production on the other projects I’m working on. More music is next for sure.
