Review Fix Exclusive: ERA 9’s Anthony Lalla Talks ‘Hero’ And More

Review Fix chats with ERA 9’s Anthony Lalla, who discusses the band’s origin, creative process and goals for their new EP, “Hero.”

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Anthony Lalla: We have Laurie and Lalla on lead vocals, Jona on guitar, Joe on bass, and Marco on drums. Jona, Marco and Joe met in high school, all sharing the same passion for music, and that progressed to the start of a band, and lead us to where we are today. Lalla was in a “rival” band from our city, so we all knew of each other in the MTL music scene. Joe and Jona had actually seen Laurie perform with her old band years before she joined Era 9, through mutual friends.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Lalla: The core of our music will be hard rock, with heavy riffs, but we enjoy changing up the basic usual structure of songs to an EDM/Trap type of structure. We’ll come up with the base idea, with just guitars, bass and drums, and our drummer, who does our programming, will then add his flavour of EDM and hip-hop elements, and then lyrics and vocal melodies. But sometimes, he’ll come up with the initial idea and we build around an EDM/Trap song, adding the rest of the instruments and vocals later.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Lalla: Our newest music hasn’t been released yet, so our song “Hero” off our latest EP release titled “Warrior,” would be our stand out song. It has heavy rock elements, catchy pop and hip-hop vocals that you can’t help but sing along to, and badass EDM/Trap drops and breakdowns. \m/

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Lalla: We love when people hear us live and tell us “Wow, I’ve never heard anything like this before!” We like to be original and have a very unique sound. What inspires us most in terms of writing is usually how we’re feeling and what we’re going through in the moment. Whether it’s struggles, love, heartbreak, anger, or society, etc, we all have emotions and stories to tell.  Everyone can relate!

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Lalla: We’ve been writing new material and gearing up to take over the world in 2017. Make sure to follow us on all social networks @era9official and join 9gAng now at www.era9.com to receive updates on upcoming tours, and release dates of new music. Thanks for having us!
