Eternal Warrior: Awakening #1 Review: A Solid Start

Valiant Comic’s “Eternal Warrior” is one of the most powerful superheroes in their universe. The only thing that seems to stop him (temporarily) is amnesia. That seems to be the case in “Eternal Warrior: Awakening #1” written by Robert Venditti and art by Renato Guedes and it’s a great story with some missteps.

After suffering a head injury in battle Gilad Anni-Padda is living in a small village and suffering from amnesia. One day a geomancer comes along, refreshes his memory, and now Gilad has to go and get revenge on the guy who did this to him.

While the plot has been done before, it’s executed decently here. While Gilad getting his memories back happens a bit too quickly, as well as the rest of the story feeling a bit too rushed, the story is still entertaining. It’s always great to see a character you like getting revenge on someone who is a complete jerk.

Some people may be put off by how Gilad gets his revenge, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s the subtle ways that seem to get the job done better. Just going the traditional route would’ve been an unoriginal borefest we’ve seen hundreds of times.

Guedes has done a fine job of creating a great looking comic. It lives up to the already great art that people are accustomed to seeing in Valiant’s comic. Some of the best panels are whenever there is a large group of people. What’s especially worth noting is that he managed to make lightning look like high art.

While not being all that original and having some problems, “Eternal Warrior: Awakening #1” is still a great read. The story is still entertaining and will delight people based on how the events leading up to it unfolded and the art is some of the best that Valiant has to offer.
