Review Fix Exclusive: David Brummer Talks As You Will: Shakespearean Improv

Review Fix chats with Improver David Brummer, who discusses his upcoming production of As You Will: Shakespearean Improv.

About the Production:

As You Will: Shakespearean Improv is the latest, and one of the more innovative, improv troupes in NYC. Performing the first Sunday of every month, through 2017, at 8:30 p.m. at The People’s Improv Theatre at The Underground 123 E 24th St, NYC, the clever 45-minute show invites its audience to help bring to life all the plays and poetry Shakespeare would have written … with today’s sensitivities (or lack thereof). Basically, we’ve heard all 884,647 words written by William Shakespeare. What about the words he hasn’t written… yet?

Conor Mullen, a leading member of the troupe, is an experienced and credentialed fight choreographer and master improver. He is currently appearing in the 50th anniversary company of Israel Horovitz‘ LINE.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

David Brummer: We’re a collaborative bunch of fools. We play a lot, we fail a lot, and, once in a while, we have a good idea. We experiment and twist our form around all the time in rehearsal, so when we perform it can be the proper, polished mess we love so much.

Review Fix: What makes this different or special?

Brummer: It feels like we’ve worked together forever. It’s a special kind of synergy. We know how each other work, and we know how to push each others buttons. We have a lot of fun together, and I think it shows.

Review Fix: What did you learn about yourself through this process?

Brummer: I learned to roll with the punches. If someone hands you a rapier, you gotta stab something. Also, for myself, I leaned there are several things that rhyme with orange.

Review Fix: How does it feel to be a part of something like this?

Brummer: It’s ridiculous. It’s incredible. It’s exhilarating. And it’s been profoundly satisfying. We love Shakespeare, and we love improv, and on the first Sunday of every month we get to bring them together.

Review Fix: What are your ultimate goals for this production and for the future?

Brummer: Residencies, out of town shows, and long runs sound great to us! We’d love to share our work with people all over the world, but as long as Shakespeare is spinning in his grave, that’s enough for us.

Review Fix: What do you think your audiences will most enjoy?

Brummer: The sheer silliness of it all. We poke fun at and honor the Bard all at the same time. Also, the death scenes usually get a laugh.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Brummer: Act II. Then maybe a Carnival Cruise.
