Review Fix Exclusive: Marcus Paul James Talks Paper Hearts And More

Review Fix chats with singer Marcus Paul James, who discusses his career and recently released Paper Hearts EP.

About Marcus Paul James:

Whether it is singing on Broadway, at a Sofar Sounds show, or Sunday in church, Marcus Paul James uses music to inspire and transform his audiences across the globe. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Marcus was baptized in music from the moment he could stand in the choir loft. James’ new single Paper Hearts is an epic melding of personal story, rich production, and of course Marcus’ soul-drenched voice. R&B, Pop, and Singer-Songwriter influences flow into each other to create a blend reminiscent of John Legend, Miguel, and One Republic.

Review Fix: Why is music important to you?

Marcus Paul James: God, because it is my life!!  I can’t imagine a world without it!! Seriously can you??

Review Fix: How did you first get involved in music?

James: I have been singing since I was little in church and I was a part of everything that had to do with music there. It wasn’t until I got to high school I started really writing things and putting the pieces of my own musical puzzle together.

Review Fix: How was “Paper Hearts” written? What makes it a special track?

James: Paper Hearts started on piano very very simply. I wrote it fairly quickly but put it down for a while. And when I came back to it, the song was still just as heavy as the moment I wrote it.  That’s when I realized I might have written a piece of my heart into this song. Haha that sounds so poetic but its the truth.

Review Fix: How do you want this EP to be remembered?

James: This EP pushes my own boundaries in sound, feel, and subject. I hope it will be remembered as something brave and truthful music that is making strides in the African American singer/songwriter world.

Review Fix: How does your experience on stage lend itself to your singing career?

James: Theatre is about story telling and you have to be good at it to survive on stage. So I bring that need to tell the story to my writing. I want the listener to go on the journey with me. Also, the discipline learned on Broadway is incomparable.. Broadway people are the hardest working people in the world.

Review Fix: What’s next?

James: MORE MUSIC!! So excited to gig and tour with this music and keep moving forward.  Definitely have some exciting prospects and new music coming later this year. You can keep up to date and see where I am playing next at MarcusPaulJames.com

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

James: Thank you for your time, and thanks to all the readers and listeners out there. Your support is the best gift of all, and I thank everyone of you. LIVE.LOVE.MUSIC (repeat)
