Review Fix Exclusive: Space Cadets Talk ‘Way Too Loud’ And More

Review Fix chats with The Space Cadets’ Zachary Wexelman, Dan Creed, and John Cocco, who discuss their new single, “Way Too Loud,” detailing its creative process and origin. The band also chat about their goals for the future and share how their sound has evolved over the years.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Zach: My best friend growing up got me into music. I imitated everything he did: Everquest, eating cereal all day, picking on his sister, and music. His passions became mine.

Dan: I started as an “Orch Dork” playing cello in middle school. Then I realized I was better at bass.

John: Music got involved with us.

Review Fix: How has your sound evolved since you started the band?

John: We get older, our sound stays the same age. Alright, Alright, Alright.

Zach: We’ve come a long way. I played open mics around Los Angeles for a couple years before I asked Dan to join me on bass. We played as a duo for a little over a year before John arrived with the cajón. About a year after that John upgraded to a 3-piece drum kit. It’s been a steady evolution from singer-songwriter to full-fledged band.

Review Fix: What makes your brand of rock special?

Zach: You get what you see: acoustic guitar, bass, 3-piece drum kit. There’s no hiding behind backing tracks or distorted electric guitars. We put just as much emphasis on the space between the notes as we do the notes themselves.

Review Fix: Why do you think people should enjoy it?

Zach: They shouldn’t. They shouldn’t feel obligated to do anything.

Dan: Our sound is honest, though. It’s real. We don’t want to bullshit anyone. Like Zach said, you get what you see.

Review Fix: What inspired your new single?

John: This city can be frustrating.

Review Fix: How do you want that song to affect people?

Zach: The song wasn’t written for other people. It was written out of the desire to create something special and original, not as an attempt to affect others in a particular way. That being said, I hope people at least recognize that it comes from somewhere real.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?

Dan: Learn how to play bass.

John: Worldwide tour, groupies, and an album.

Zach: The same thing we do every night, Pinky – try to take over the world.

Review Fix: What’s next?

John: More music.

Dan: More shows.

Zach: More.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

John: Shout out to my man, Zoli!

Dan: I mean, we could be working for the phone company. So that’s something to think about.

Zach: “Fuck commerce.” –Billy Walsh
