Review Fix Exclusive: Inside the ‘Pacific Rim: Aftermath’ Comic Book Series

Review Fix chats with Pacific Rim: Aftermath writer Cavan Scott, who discussed the series and how it’s an awesome naturally extension of the hit film series.Detailing his working relationship with the minds behind the film and future of the series, Scott lets us know why the series is a special one.

Review Fix: What is it like to work with this license?

Cavan Scott: It’s been an absolute blast. I love the original film, so it’s a thrill to add to that world. Who wouldn’t want to play with Jaegers and Kaiju?

Review Fix: Does the team involved with the film have any say in the creative process?

Scott: Absolutely. We’ve been working closely with the production team to make sure that everything that happens in the comic is in line with their vision for the Pacific Rim universe as a whole. It’s recognisably Pacific Rim but seen through different eyes.

Review Fix:
How is the comic different from the films?

Scott: The films focus on the PPDC itself, on the frontline of the war against the Kaiju. The comic is about those who, as the title suggests, have to live with the aftermath of these titanic battles.

We largely follow two characters – Joshua Griffin, who was a former Jaeger pilot who has been left behind by the world that he tried to serve, and Hannibal Chau, who of course we met in the first movie. From its inception, the theme of the mini-series has been ‘the mighty have fallen’. Here we have two men who were once giants because of the war. It defined them, Griffin because he fought the monsters, Chau because he profited from them. How do those men cope now that the monsters have been defeated?

Of course, that’s not to say that you won’t find Jaegers and Kaiju in the pages of Aftermath — they’re there, but maybe not in the way you expect.

Review Fix: What’s your favorite part of working with this material?

Scott: I’ve loved working with Richard Elson who is producing such amazing, detailed work. The amount of time he’s spending on every page is staggering. And when Rich draws a jaeger punching a slavering monster, you know that punch hurts!

Review Fix: How do you want this comic book series to be remembered?

Scott: That’s an interesting question. I hope it opens up the world of Pacific Rim beyond the ranks of PPDC rangers and scientists, exploring what life is like for the people on the streets.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Scott: For Pacific Rim? Well, we have Amara, our exclusive online comic which is available via LINE Webtoons, and introduces one of the major characters from the upcoming film. And beyond that, I’d love to write more Pacific Rim. There’s an entire world of machines and monsters to explore.
