Review Fix Exclusive: DTease’s Wilson Gil Talks ‘Slapshot’ And More

Review Fix chats with DTease’s Wilson Gil, who discusses the band’s signature sound, origin and new single and video, “Slapshot.”

Review Fix: How did the band get together? Or How did you get started in music?

Wilson Gil: The band got together kind of by accident. I was going to put together a punk rock band just for the summer and then I hooked up with all these great players and I decided why not make it into something more than that…something that I have dreamed about my whole life. Kind of like the culmination of everything that I have learned and loved in rock ‘n’ roll.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Gil: Well, sometimes inspiration comes from some kind of traumatic event that is happening in my life. Other times I just get a thought in the shower or walking down the street and I get together with the band and we hash out the tune.

Or sometimes I just bang it out on the Acoustic Guitar and bring it to the band.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song on the current album?  How was it written?

Gil: There are really too many standout songs to pick from. I really like In Too Deep and Slap Shot. In Too Deep was written with the whole band. Slap Shot was just a quick session that popped out this tune.

Review Fix: What did you learn from this last album? How did it affect your future?

Gil: Well in a nutshell, we wound up getting kind of shelved and it took a lot to get the album completed, so I would say get everything in writing and make sure there are deadlines for completion on both sides.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?

Gil: Our goals are to get the album out and tour much is possible. And we’re always working on making our live show bigger, more creative and more immersive.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?

Gil: I would say we are a hard-driving, ass shaking, glam punk band…a cross between The Dead Boys, MC5 and James Brown.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Gil: At a live show, we want people to be able to let go, go crazy,  dance their ass off, and have a great time. But also, examine the lyrics and what we are about and make them think on a deeper level as well.

Review Fix: Why is this new album special?

Gil: Because we worked so hard on it, it’s just a really great collection of good rock ‘n’ roll tunes.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Gil: I don’t know really but I hope it’s good.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Gil: Check us out on Spotify and come see a live show! You won’t be disappointed. We would love for you write to us and we will always write back.
