Review Fix Exclusive: Ocean’s Conor Hyde Talks New EP and More

Review Fix chats with Ocean’s Conor Hyde, who details the band’s origins, goals and creative process for their upcoming EP.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Conor Hyde: The band technically started in Guildford but after band members started dropping like flies, the line up had a dramatic revamp in Brighton around the time of late 2015, so now we’re predominantly a Brighton based band! This current line up came about from meeting each other at parties and since then we’ve all lived with each and have become very close.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Hyde: A lot of fun! Definitely one of the best aspects of being in a band! All of us have a say in the writing process opposed to one individual taking over the entirety of the songwriting. It makes it more intriguing that way, as we’re all from slightly different musical backgrounds, therefore, the end result of our compositions, are often interesting.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Hyde: That would be our single ‘What You Did to Me’. It gained lots of traction when we released it and people seem to like that song the most when we perform it live. The single was released a year ago and we’re now hoping to return to writing more songs like that. The initial idea came about when our guitarist Conor was sitting on the chorus chord progression for a while and was a bit stuck with what to do with it as the chord progression is so weird. After many hours of scrutinising, the rest of the song started to come together, then once the basic draft was established, the song was shown to the rest of the band to work on and finalise.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?

Hyde: There’s a lot we’d like to accomplish this year such as an international tour, to feature on a good number of festival line ups and for our Spotify to grow substantially! A girl can dream I guess.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Hyde: It would be great if our music resonated with people in the same way we feel about the music. We’re hoping to add more emotional depth into our song writing. We want to raise some hairs and see some goose bumps!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Hyde: We’ve just released an EP so we’re currently at this exciting point where we’ve got to decide what to do next and where we should go from here. We’re looking forward to what 2018 holds for us! We’re going to dedicate a lot of time to writing and even some acoustic related mischief is on the cards for sure… Either way, we’re not taking anytime out and we will keep on doing what we’re doing.
