This is the worst play I have ever seen. Not only is the writing horrible, but the acting and directing is the worst I’ve ever seen. I have never left a bad review (or actually any review for a play in general) but this performance was so bad that I felt I had to warn others.

Although i appericate the 80’s feel of the movie , i could tell with in the first 15 minutes i was going to be disappointed. The great screenwriter syd fields taught that you could tell within the 15minutes whether the film is that one you would like or not. what you call great suspense, i call a movie “inisisting” on its self. Like maybe if you lived on a desert island or had never seen a good horror movie would you enjoy this. Its not terrible but not great either. people who give this movie a good review probably over identify with some aspect of the movie (the 80’s set design and costume, or the way one of the girls looked, or some other minute detail ignoring the movie as a whole…

Just watched all of these, and I would say this review is very fair. I personally didn’t think French Roast was as hilarious as this reviewer indicates, but it’s certainly worthy of a nomination. I also thought he was way too hard on Granny O’Grimm, which was absolutely hilarious (though top-to-bottom not as strong as some of these other candidates). I totally agree that Partly Cloudy should have been an Oscar nominee, and comments on The Kinematograph are spot on. (I can’t help but wonder if the dialogue problems can’t be explained in part by translation?) Logorama is a clever concept and very entertaining, but I personally found it way, way too heavy-handed, and not nearly as well animated as many of these other selections.

I enjoyed this review very much although I have a point or two to add.
I think the focus on the Max Fisher character is slightly misdirected. I think if you consider the characters in most of Wes Anderson’s film you would see that he fits in well. I don’t think it’s Jason Schwartzman that is flawed but the character in general. Like the most of the characters in his film he is extremely talented in his professional endeavors and not his social ones. Sorry this is a bit ridiculous, but judging on how a 15 year old would construct a series of plays in the manner that he did I would consider them something close to genius, his schemes of course are not but that is kind of the delight of the film I think. I’m just commenting because I feel that your interpretation on the nature of the character in the film influenced you more than you knew or at least enough to see this area of the film as a negative.

Badfinger’s album and CD release of the Album ‘Straight up” Was filled with many. many keepers, one of the best albums ever. Take it all, Perfection, I’d die Babe all could’ve been radio hits, as well many others.
L:ike the albums mostly written by Mark Farner of Grand Funk and Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep. I saw them live while I was in Spain from 74 to 76 causing me to miss any chance to see the early years version of Grand Funk, though through Billboard, and Rock magazines I was able to keep up the Funk and a few months after following my future wife to the Detroit suburbs running my own Radio Shack on the infamous 8 Mile Road and Dequinder and was successful enough to be promoted to the 3 highest selling store in my District, I just knew I’d be seeing Grand Funk somewhere, little did I know the band was already history. Their album with the late great Frank Zappa was a raw straight through first take album, and all the Farner sonds reflected his prowess growing in his music, with the same very early cry to save our World and ecology, well before his time, Mark like this Badfinger album as well as Hensley “Demons and Wizards and Magician’s Bithday were 2 of the greatest albums to follow, Funk had several when Mark was wher he should be, the major writer, Brewer wrote decent lyrics but 3 chord wonders can only be leaned on so many times before they grow old.
Straight up is an album of hits Day after Day, Baby Blue were very successful, But unlike a lot of other Badfinger albums this one stayed with similar quality songs, You could hear Harrison influence on Day after Day and others, and Rundren always got the best out of bands. American Band and most of Shinin On, the album was far too heavy in Brewer Frost 3 chord wonders.
“Straight Up” follows in the successful side of Rungren’s genious, If you like “Come and get it” “No Matter Waht” ” I hear you Knockin” along with this album’s Baby Blue and Day after Day” you will love this album and especially the CD with original versions and demos of the future products, showing the way a song is done, makes all the difference in the world, And bands that sound great live, often are first take recorders, when it wasn’t a novice Terry Knight, which the artistry and the year it was recorded prevented them from being the hits they later became. I heard them all over the world and played them in Spain and America and know the effect they have on a dance floor, even “Closer to home” with a song almost 9 minutes long with different tempos a great bridge and the end with orchestration was what makes it a mainstay on Classic Rock stations. Voted by Vietnam vets as the song that helped them remember what was dear to their hearts “Home” they asked him to sing the song at the 25th anniversary of the Wall. And he treated them to a free 90 minute concert with full band for nothing. Everytime I saw him play it , there’s always a dedication to the Vietnam vets and all others, a song Farner prayed to God to give him a song to touch the hearts he most wanted to touch, The song was “Closer to Home” written in the reverse order Farner usually writes.
Badfinger’s “Straight Up” was their masterpiece. Buy it you’ll like it!

I’d have to completely disagree with your review. I found this film extremely suspenseful. I’ve now watched it more than once (after picking up the Blu-Ray… still wish I had a VHS copy ). I love the look & feel of the film. I like that it’s not a typical horror film in that it has no gratuitous language or nudity. It hits where it counts… and that’s atmosphere & suspense. The excellent, eerie score helps hit those properties home.

As soon as the couple leave you home… you KNOW (because you’re told) that she’s not alone. She acts as though she’s alone… eating pizza, listening to headphones, dancing, watching TV but since you, the viewer are aware of the “able bodied” mother upstairs… it made me nervous.

I feel bad for those of you who can’t see the magic of this film. If you don’t feel the suspense… then I can’t believe you actually enjoy watching horror/suspense films, as this is one of the best I’ve seen in years.

The Wii is very fun for families, but not an exact hard-core gaming console, as for me, I noticed the more serious type games are on xBox 360 and PS3. Wii is fun for all ages, and my sister and mother are both saving up their Chinese New Year money to chip in for one of these along with a few games that allows them to work on physical activities. My sister is indeed overweight, so she needs it, and my mom just wants to have a bit of fun that lets her move.

My sister also has an Nintendo DS. She plays it every night. I’d say it’s a very cool gadget, I played Cooking Mama on it

For myself, E2 is one of those “so bad it’s good” films that flooded theatres and cable TV in the early to mid-80’s. Cannon was so popular for this. Mindless, well constructed, visceral action and viiolence. But, the Cannon team also had heart ie. Breakin, Rappin, King Soloman’s Minds. I saddens me that this film has not made it’s way to DVD but it warms my heart to see the cult following it’s achieved. At least, I still have my 1984 VHS copy. There’s been rumors that a workprint of the Marc Buntzman’s original version of E2 exists in some very obscure places. Wow, I’m glad to see Ritchie getting his dues, both on the list and with all the comments. Since Hendrix died, Ritchie has been my favorite rock guitarist. Such a unique style and so much talent. I like the fact that in concert, Ritchie will go after a riff that is so challenging and complex, that most others would never even attempt. It’s a shame that he isn’t even more famous; so many people don’t really know who he is.

I’m a little surprised that Satriani isn’t on the list – he’s great technically, but his song writing doesn’t always match the others on this list. But I would put him above Johnny W and Michael Schenker – even though I love them both. And Buckethead should also get honorable mention.

Mark was my first inspiration to pick up a guitar and learn to sing. I was in a Military school on an Airbase outside Madrid, mostly Americans. I got the lead in West Side Story mainly because of my vocal range, bass to soprano which once in a while the chorus teacher would tell me, let the girls sing the soprano Ric, I’m trying to hear them! Haha! But it got me a job at 17 with GI’s and a Spanish guitarist,we split lead and rythm. We played mostly the NCO club and Officers. Since we weren’t Spanish nationals they wouldn’t let us play off base without a license and everyone in the band to read music. I was the only one, so that was that, They also protected their Country by having a 100% import tax on anything they also carried; Mark’s material kept the crowds dancing till I became disabled after cancer and 6 injections a week for a year. But Mark’s music always made the dance floor fill up from biker bars, to opening for the Gatlin Brothers, who loved us and told the promoter we should’ve been right before them. We ended with Some Kinda Wonderful and Closer to Home the album version, which everyone loved. So I know first hand how many fans Mark has, all over the world, and Country. I’ve seen him play with the back stabber 3 times during their reunion. And I’ve seen Mark with the Godrockers, and NRG and NRG is better then the original band. All the shackles are removed from Mark and yes “For the People” is by leaps and bounds the best ever Mark Farner album. The band adds a lot to what is already perfection. And what Don and Mel are doing is just plain sad. A drummer and I and our wives paid a whopping 2 bucks to see them, and we walked out after a sickly falsetto version of Closer to home, it’s just plain sad. We all looked at each other and started walking. I want my 2 bucks back and 5 minutes alone with one of Brewer’s faces! Disabled and Osteoporosis and all, I would enjoy busting a few bones on him. Pure A hole all the way! I know Mark is too much of a class act to say it, but I’m not, I’m not! I”M NOT! BREWER YOU SUCK! Maybe if you work real hard you’ll suck less! You calling yourself Grand Funk is about as much of a crime as me calling myself the Pope!
Keep the Funk alive Mark, you are and always will be the backbone of the band. And truthfully I love your sound now, and the band is better period!

I think that show is difficult to stomach especially if you are not willing to accept the fact that there is painful truth in many of the story lines. I think one of those episodes was when Huey decided to watch nothing but “black” television and he goes down a horrible and dark road. Funny yet painfully true.

I was never really a fan of these movies, and I could see why this one would be distasteful in your eyes. I mean, I’ve seen and heard far too many stories that are just like these, especially from Bollywood movies. Yeah they are amusing, but get boring, just like you said.

I wasn’t planning on watching this one, and since you said it was that bad, then maybe I’m not going to bother. Plus, I never usually watch these movies, I like thrillers and horror and animated and all those cool action and adventure ones.

But of course putting in a decent cast would make the movie seem appealing to people which is why they manage to make money out of it. Eh.. IMDB’s overall users rating sees it as a 5.3.. So I guess to them it’s a bit mediocre, then again, it could be worse.

Funny video too.

I guess you left off Dylan because you considered him “Folk” and Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers because you consider them “Southern Rock,” correct? O.K. on the last two – I’ll give you that. This is a very good review discussing the negative aspects of 2012. Though, I agree the graphics were amazing, it’s true that the plot and character development was very insufficient and it really was just a man and his family trying to find a way out and get lucky every time, while everyone else suffers an instant death.

Then again, this movie is really about a disaster and not exactly about the characters per se, so I can see why the characters are a bit undeveloped. I mean, it’s hard to discuss the life of so many characters when every second, some part of the world is falling apart.

It really does remind me of “The Day After Tomorrow” and it really didn’t explain much about the Mayan calendar. This movie is pretty fun to watch because everything happening looks real, but it’s not a movie that could be watched over and over again. It’s really, like you said, a drop-and-forget movie after the first view.

I agree, the trailer did spoil a lot of the cool scenes.. unfortunately.

There was also a lot of mentions of “special effects” and “effects” in the review, though it is what the movie is mainly about, but switching up and using other words would make it sound less repetitive

Indeed, I am a big fan of Johnny Depp and Sweeney Todd. I thought this movie portrayed Todd very well, and along with the other characters. The scenes were fit with Mr. Todd, dark and gloomy, and just as foggy as Sherlock Holmes (2009) depiction of London.

I just think the movie was a bit predictable, considering many of the climaxes were not shocking to me (as I already guessed who a person was or what would happen to a character.)

Needless to say, I would love to suggest that:

1) Many viewers, including me found the blood in the beginning and throughout the movie to look very fake. I doubt it was meant to look real though, but it never affected my opinion on the movie and what it brought out.

2) Stephen Sondheim indeed put the magic into this entire film because what is a musical without music? However, I think Depp, Carter, and the rest of the cast deserves a part on their singing since Depp did state on an interview that I saw on YouTube, that he took singing lessons and tried his best to sing for this role. Overall, I think the casts’ singing was amazing, and I love the songs, so that’s why I thought it would be nice to mention how the cast did with the music, not only their accents. But we all know Depp does great British accents in every movie he is in!

I was actually expecting this movie to be really bad (which I thought it was) and I really don’t think it was needed at all. In fact, ending at the first movie would have been great, but it’s becoming almost like Shrek, where the entire story is stretched into almost a drama series about the life stories and issues a couple is going through constantly.

Although I read the entire article, I didn’t find where the answer to “whether this movie was really needed”, or is it supposed to be indirect and for the reader to decide?

You also said that the movie is slightly geared towards children, which I think it is, but afterwards, you also said that many of the jokes and humor would mainly be understood by older viewers. Would it still be considered a good movie for kids? Just wondering.

I would think children wouldn’t find this amusing. Plus, I saw the movie myself and really didn’t like it. I usually laugh at everything, both the first and second Ice Age, I laughed hysterically but this one was actually just what I expected to be – not very funny.

But yes, the series is slowly losing track of what made it good in the first place, I would make a hypothesis stating that if they came out with Ice Age 4, that it would end up like Little Mermaid 2, where the story doesn’t even focus on the previous main characters anymore.

A good article, addressing the fact that Ice Age 3 is an entertaining movie for all ages, but unsure whether the film is going up in ratings or just dropping since it might’ve lost track of what made it successful.

I didn’t think Sherlock Holmes was a good movie either, but it was well worth the visit to the theater and for entertainment purposes. I went to see this and it was difficult to hear Downey in many parts of the movie because his voice seemed a bit low in the theater, compared to everything and everyone else in the movie. His British accent was not very convincing.

But you do have to admit that this movie depicted Sherlock Holmes differently. Instead of wearing a deerstalker (hat), he wore clothes that not the average “Sherlock Holmes” would have worn, and that was something new to see, rather than seeing the same boring old guy in every show or movie in the past.

Holmes wasn’t portrayed as a respected and intelligent man in this film, but he did have wits and he was cunning at times. He also was a wise guy in many parts of the movie, and I didn’t really see him as a James Bond type of guy. He could be compared to Jack Sparrow more, though Holmes doesn’t run away from fights too often but, they both share the same wittiness and they both come up with a quick plan in action.

Since the London streets here were dark and gloomy in this movie, it would be cool to add that Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd”, depicted London streets to be just as dark and gloomy too.

“The earth is said to have been long destroyed and robbed of all its greenery, yet it is never explained why the people of earth wouldn’t choose to inhabit the planet of Pandora instead of mining for a useless mineral.”

I think the reason why humans didn’t inhabit the area was because of the jungle’s more natural flow, and the humans tend to be way too technological. Plus if they continued to use technology and interfere with the entire area, the jungle would be long gone and the idea of the Navi creatures seeing their ecosystem as a whole would be destroyed.

Plus, watching the movie two times, I recall that humans were not able to breathe and take in oxygen in the outsides of the jungle areas. It showed it many times in the movies. I could be wrong, but also it would be tedious to move all humans to this forest, the soil probably isn’t the same and technology didn’t go THAT far as such depicted in WALL-E where everyone could live off not having to do a thing.

Overall, this is a good article, though personally, I thought the movie was fantastic and surprisingly, it’s not because of the graphics or special effects. I thought the story (though I heard it was not original) is still amusing and fun to watch. I actually thought it was a bit too long even!

It would also be good to mention that the 3D experience was not as fun as I expected. A lot of the objects that were 3D were things such as rocks or people off the camera’s focus. It made me a bit dizzy and light-headed.

Steve, I think it is impossible to list 10 lps that will satisfy everyone. However, even fans who never loved the Beach Boys would have to concede that Pet SOUNDS is a monumental achievement in the history of recorded music!! In addition , prog rock fans would obviously emphasis ELP, PINK FLOYD,TULL,Moody BLUES(DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED),among others. ANOTHER GREAT ARTICLE!!!!!

fun interview, but when Steve mentioned newer songs he’s singing like “Airborne Ranger..” ?? that song came out 20 years ago. There was no mention of Marks’ 2006 “For The People” and that could have been a big part of the discussion. I wonder why Mark wouldn’t have brought it up. Also, songs that Mark wrote in GFR were discussed, and one that kept getting mentioned was “Inside Looking Out”, but it’s pretty common knowledge that that was originally an Animals song, not written by Mark. Lastly I would have loved some discussion on why Mark is not doing many, if any at all, club dates anymore. I know that it was something to do with the smoking policies, but that is a non issue now.

I saw Mark on the tour w/ Ringo Starr he talks about in your interview. Absolutely one of the most entertaining shows I’ve ever seen. Farner had the audience in his hand during “Some Kind of Wonderful”. Hard to believe two of the guys from that tour (Entwistle, Preston) are gone. Thanx foir bringing back the memory.

I absolutely love Joe’s Shanghai. We always get the pork soup dumplings, which is an art in itself when it comes to eating the savory treat. But may I also recommend the Pork Shoulder and the Shanghai Rice? Simply AMAZING…definitely worth the wait. They also have other locations in Midtown and Flushing…the Midtown location is more expensive, not as good and smaller portions (boo)…but the Flushing location does it right and I’ve been luckier on not waiting as long if at all (worth the trek).

Now you’ve got to change directions, and head over to Paprika on the LES for the Oxtail Ragu on broad noodles!…Oh I’ve so many loves in NYC when it comes to eats…we’ll talk

I thought this movie review was perfectly written. The first paragraph kept my attention and I especially liked how it mentioned details about the plot, without revealing too much of what actually went on throughout the film. I, myself, am a huge fan of the Saw series, but I found the first movie to be the most entertaining and the most shocking simply because the Saw storyline is unique and out of this world compared to other horror films out now.

Another fine interview. Trower’s a class act. Those bonus BBC tracks on the re-issue of “Bridge Of Sighs” are quite strong and, IMHO, worthy of a separate release. Even though BOS is considered his classic, I’ve always been partial to “Long Misty Days” (maybe because it’s the first Trower album I owned), which tends to be somewhat overlooked. It’s quite strong, so give it a listen, if you haven’t already.

Excellent interview, Steve. Andy seems like a true gentleman. And, judging by the pic above, looks like he’s taken good care of himself over the years, too! I learned something, as I didn’t know he had all those other writing credits. I agree, Free is perenially underrated. Don’t know if the mega-success of Bad Co., and Paul Rodgers has anything to do with overshadowing them or not, but Free deinfinitely deserves more credit than they are given.

I never really liked the Ultimat Warrior because of the simple facts you just commented on! I was and am and I know you are considered what they call a “smart mark” Now I dont like to be called a “mark” for anything, but we do know our wrestling! My two favorite matches of him were Wrestlemania 6 with Hulk Hogan ( and that’s only because I was a HULKAMANIAC. Lord knows he couldn’t wrestle either!) and the other was at SummerSlam 92 against The Macho Man who, ofcourse, had to carry the Warrior. Wrestlemanis 12 really annoyed me how they just aloud him to beat at the time an up and coming wrestler( we didint know how up and coming he really would be) HHH…. I would love to erase that match from history but we can’t. Furthermore when he signed with WCW, which was a farce just so Hogan could return the favor and beat him at Halloween Havoc that was just atrocious! That just made me like him even less! In closing, if I didn’t read your review I would not give this dvd the time of day, but I will now! So thank you, and keep up the good work….

I am pleased that you foound Lynn Nottage’s play Intimate Apparel praiseworthy but puzzled then at the exception you take at the lead performer and over half the cast. True you deservingly praise the work of Luke Forbes and Shatara Hale, exceptionally talented actors who appear at various points throughout the story but you call the lead Sandra Williams “tepid” and lacking in presence. Ms Williams is onstage for the entire running time of the play and her character propels the entire story. I have yet to see a tepid or merely adequate actor who can do that with a new play and have anyone come away feeling they have seen or heard worthwhile writing. Any character who has over 50% of a play’s dialogue (Did you note these are all two character scenes?) and is less than stellar would put an audience to sleep not bring them to their feet at the end of the play. I wonder then indeed about your other judgments.
Many elements go into the production of a play in addition to the writing and the acting. There is the scenery, the lighting, the sound and the costumes e.g. Was it instead one of these that kept you involved enough to listen to Ms Nottage admittedly glorious words delivered in your judgment so inadequately for most of the two and a half hours running time? If so, you failed to acknowledge these designers.
Finally there is the direction and, as the director I chose these talented actors from a pool of very talented African American actors ( you mention that the lead character is black only as a side note despite that fact being so central to the play’s theme) and also chose the white actors. All six exceed my expectations in terms of their performances. If fault is found with a majority of a cast in a city swarming with talented performers, one might question the director’s judgement or ability but despite holding four of the six up to personal ridicule you chose to not question or acknowledge me at all. For that I guess I thank you?
There are many directorial elements that I wish I had the time or perhaps the talent to incorporate into our production of Intimate Apparel but I am fiercely proud of our work and grateful to the actors, designers and staff who put this work together in our community theater and brought Ms Nottage’s play to a new small but appreciative audience.
i do wish that you as a reviewer had the historical, theatrical or community perspective to put this work in context. Thank you.

Pretty sure you missed the point and seeing a grown man well up was too much for you. Walk a mile in his shoes, then write.

It seems right that he comes across as a paranoid loner who doesn’t know who he can trust anymore – the question is whether anybody can trust him.”

Maybe that wasn’t the point of the film.

Needless to say you have resorted to attacking the guy without having a clue about the substance of the movie. If you research, just a little bit, about Michael Ruppert and the statements he makes you’ll see that what he purports is quite real. 90min is far too short a time to flush out all the details about what he talks about.

Peak Oil, Economic Collapse and net energy just seem new to you. That’s alright, but you might want to educate yourself a bit; for your own sake.

Enjoy the music on the Titanic buddy, or start building a raft.

I prefer ‘clandestine touch of romance “to” a forgotten period’, instead of, well, “of”– I think it works a bit better i.e. it doesn’t sound slapped together i.e. it is more fluid– see where I am going?

After reading fifty reviews with such completely polarizing views, I have to think that Jared Hess is going to be a contender in the race for king of the nerds title. I don’t care, and neither does Jared Hess. I am so glad to see so many sane responses discussing the brilliance of Ritchie Blackmore. No other guitarist spans the decades of both recording and performance with his constant awesome virtuosity and inventiveness. I have seen just about every major rock guitarist live (including Hendrix) and no one touches Blackmore live. Ever. Pity that so few videos and films exist of his early playing. One just has to watch the 1972 Denmark Hallen show to see a glimpse of his energy and balls-out mastery of his instrument. In the studio, how many guitarists can match up to the pantheon of classic riffs and solos Blackmore created, often (at his own admission) in one-off sessions over 5 decades of quality recording. Even at his most bored or repetitive, Blackmore always finds something interesting to play in any style. The much overrated Page, for example, could never play as well live consistently, although his songwriting was very strong. Beck is one dimensional, as is Clapton, when compared to what Blackmore has chosen to play over the years. Few guitarists inspire fans to savor each song as Blackmore has, even today with Blackmore’s Night. Anyone who sees the current band in concert knows the demon is still loose, dancing along the strings with a fluidity and intelligence few musicians in any genre have ever attained. Not to mention the man, at 64, looks twenty years younger and will outlive and outproduce his peers if only for the fact that his ability to inhabit new music and his willingness to please himself keeps him fresh and vital. The fact he is not in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame points out how shallow and ridiculously irrelevant that institution has become.

I had the pleasure and privilege to see Ritchie Blackmore with Blackmore’s Night for the second time in Chicago last Saturday night at the House of Blues. The band was superb and they played for two hours and twenty minutes doing their renaissance thing. At the 3/4 mark they rocked it up a bit doing (in this order) Woman From Tokyo, Smoke on the Water, and Black Night with his wife taking lead vocals of course and the rest of us in a sing-along. It was fucking great. Ritchie gave so much of himself to the audience that night both in his incredible guitar playing and his personality and playfulness. I have seen Blackmore (5) different times. Twice with Deep Purple, once with Rainbow and twice now with Blackmore’s Night.

I am a workingman’s guitarist as I am sure their are others writing hear as well. One thing we all have in common in writing here is we love guitar music. Here is a list of they guitarists I’ve been fortunate to see and hear play in person: Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Steve Howe, Santana, Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Edward Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Ted Nugent, Robin Trower, Peter Frampton, Derek Trucks, Eric Johnson, Al DiMeola, and I may be forgetting some. Let me close with a few quotes from some of the greats about each other:

Ritchie Blackmore – “Jeff Beck gets fucking notes from nowhere you know. Sometimes he finds notes that I don’t have on my guitar”

Eddie VanHalen on Allan Holdsworth – “He’s the best in my book. He can play over any chord change you want, and his improv comes from so deep down.”

David Gilmour – I like Eddie Van Halen’s playing alot. Of course, I can’t do that at all. I don’t have the dexterity in my fingers to play that fast.”

I love all these guys..long live the guitar.

I was there the night you were and thought the show was great. I agree with your review. I did, though, feel awfully let down that he chose not to play Bluebird or Daydream. I thought these two slow tempo songs would have added to Trower’s mystique as an all-around great guitar player. To hear his guitar interspersed with the vocals is an aural experience and those two songs really become prayers. Unfortunately, I don’t think Pattison has that melodic quality to his voice that James Dewar had. All in all – a great show. Indeed, Trower’s playing has (amazingly) improved with time. Just amazing!

Good review except that I disagree about there not being laugh out loud moments. I found just as many in this episode as I have the first two. My only problem is that they show them as promos during the week so they are only mildly funny when the episode actually airs. However after the suspenders didn’t go over and Jeff said “Shazbat” in the tone of Mork from Ork, I laughed so hard I cried.

as an observer of rock guitar since mid60s – these comments about Blackmore and Hendrix , the key players on the list.Hard rock guitar owes much to the rock blues crucible of late 60s Beck Clapton Page but perhaps most to Ritchie Blackmore whose powerful attackiong slyle comes closest to defining the genre.There are at least two Blackmores _ the searing guitrarist of early Deep Purple (69-75) taking rockl guitar on occasions to zones as dissonantly innovative as Hendrix an the fluent master guitarist of Rainbow and later Purple.Hendrixs ratcheted up blues style is cosmically cen trifugal (spiralling outwards).Like john Coltrane in jazz and Maria C allas in opera Blackmores centripetal style at its most intense is like a heat seeking missile tracking its quarry at blitzing speed and with lethal effect. Two performances of Mandrake Root (Ortf ina 1970 and Granada Tv 1970) make the point.The balances are not optimal and the guitar levels on the Ortf execrable (perhaps the guitar sound on the Ortf live session could be isolated and the violume raised considerably.Its one of those rare performances where the guitar cries out justifiably for louder volume. Mandrake Root was frequently concertised by Deep Purple at the time.Using the group as a sort of musical trampoline Blackmore kicks starts a solo of sundering fury. No other guitarist( I have seen or heard and that includes Hendrix )matches it . Blackmores use of the tremolo bar is merciless yet the effect is superb. Its all part of the musical equipment needed to achieve momentary RAPTUS. In these performanxces Blackmore draws leves with the greatest guitarist Jimi |Hendrix.Its instructive to compare Blackmore with the latterday Steve Morse
Morse is fine technically and has oodles of speed but compared to Blackmore is a one trick pony. There is no incremental growth in his solos. Where Blackmore tonal colourings al;one can sound like a marauding bass guitar MORSE is samey .Factor in Blackmores cumulative heft and the discrepancy between a peerless master and a very good guitarist becomes apparent. At long last a list that actually names the two key p layers in rock guitar The debate will rage over taxonomies to wit is Hendrix rock or blues (given a conspicuous absence of a rock prequisite – a driven up tempo beat) In 1970 I believed that Ritchie BLACKMORE WAS second only to Hendrix in the rock guitar pantheon. ALmost forty years later i am of the same opinion. Dermot Murphy.

There is no doubt Richie Blackmore’s Talent has long been under-rated, I can listen to and appreciate other guitarists for the work they do, and I have seen almost all of the top 10, but after seeing Blacks with Deep Purple in the very early 70’s in Vancouver B.C. Well, what can I say, changed my life, ever since it has been Blackmore, and the rest of the list, always seems to not get the recognition he deserves, the man is head and shoulders above the rest. One addition I would add to the list is another one who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves is Alvin Lee, another great one. Cheers Bill Palmer

One only has to listen to the Son of Alerik, never mind his other virtuoso-level solo efforts to realise that Blackers richly deserves his No.2 spot in these rankings. If I had my way, I’d give him the top spot, But there again,Blackers has never tried playing upside down guitar with his teeth, smacked up to his eyeballs, so I guess that’s a serious shortcoming that no credible reviewer can afford to overlook. Seriously! Blacker’s technique: his tone, style and, particularly, his musicality are unsupassed by the other guitar greats listed. I can’t get enough of his playing.

Fair top ten. Though I’d also put Blackmore at the top. A name that I’ve not seen in the responses, and which should at least figure among the ‘honorable mentions’ is Alvin Lee. Speaking of ability and technical wizardry, the man’s got some in spades.

But I fear a ‘Top Ten’ is too small to gather all the great snarepickers: Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, Ulrich Roth, Mike Oldfield, David Gilmour, Frank Zappa, Mick Ronson, Kirk Hammett, Dave Edmunds, Django Reinhardt, Steve Howe, Glenn Tipton, Rory Gallagher… there’s just too many of them… lol

I also wonder if Hendrix would have made anyone’s top-ten shoulkd he not have died, because I feel that he ’suffers’ from what I call the James Dean syndrome, or Monroe Effect, if you like, in that he also was propulsed into mythical stardom due to dying at his peak…

hm I think the reason characters like Adam Warlock, silver surfer and Dr strange or in DC’s case Dr fate are underrated and under used is because their potentially limitless power and how that is dealt with in the context of their lives is what makes them so interesting but it also gives them an almost Deus ex Machina quality that if taken away to make a story with them more compelling also makes them less interesting,so that what you are left with when they are used at all is at best uneven story telling at worse something contrived , unappetizing and unreadable.

Wow another wonderful list.
For vocal ability hmmmm… well that means able to sing high and low. Create own unique sound and sound amazing.

Steve Perry could sing beautifully to carefully perfected ballads of Journey

Freddie Mercury was so brilliant expressing his vocals like a song bird sitting on a tree branch in the middle of a Hurricane. What range he had which came right through a cement wall. Very dramatic to listen to like an Opera showcase.

Robert Plant could do certain justice to the heavy thunderous innovative song’s put together by Led Zeppelin. He could sing the blues like nobody else and mean it.
Also Robert Plant had wonderful range from his early years up until his vocal surgery in 1974. Still never losing his ability to sing a song with passion

Over powering vocals would be David Coverdale like a rocket shooting straight into the sky.

For charisma and stage presence out of all these vocals you so carefully chose I would say between Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart and Robert Plant.

I would also like to mention David Bowie and Iggy Pop.
David Coverdale is my all time favorite vocalist.

Hey Steve,
I really enjoyed reading the top 10 guitar player list.
For ability I would say Steve Vai.
For song writing I would say Jimmy Page.
For showman I would say Eddie Van Halen.
Please note that all top ten guitar players you chose possess characteristics of immortality.
My favorite of all time is Jimmy Page.
Best riff I would say it’s between Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen.
For the greatest impact on the classic rock world hmmmm…. it would have to be all of these players Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Ritchie Blackmore. But if it would have to be just one you then would have to ask all the great guitar players on the list and see which one had the greatest impact on them the most.
Jimmy Hendrix had the greatest impact on many of them but that’s just my opinion.

Keep up the wonderful work Steve.

Bonhan great drummer. However, he is up there because the Led Zepplin legend still lives on. It is like Hendricks. Their deaths made them immortals. There are better musicians than them. Nobody has the balls to to judge them against others. There are better drummers and better guitarists for sure, but is to cenvenient and to easy to put them always on top.

Peter Townshend could be one of the best rock and roll showman, one of the best song wirter, one on the best singer, but not one of the best guitarist. Leading guitar is not his trade. yes he can olay cords, but leading is not in his DNA

Ritchie Blackmore is hands down the best guitar player and song writer, producer and music arranger etc. Ritchie’s track record speaks for itself!!!! Ritchie’s writes and plays songs people love to listen too and his guitar playing is absolutley awesome. Check Ritchie out live in concert and you will see the master at work, nobody plays the guitar better!! Ritchie’s guitar playing is real and he doesn’t use effects to hide behind when he plays, He plays some many styles and so many different instruments. I personally think Ritchie is the best!!

Great list. On pure playing ability I would rate Jeff Beck at No.1. When you include impact, riffs, song writing etc. then maybe Blackmore has the edge. He is unfairly hugely underrated and it is refreshing to see him rightly recognised for a change. Both he and Beck are legends and are still producing material in their respective fields to this day. Agree with previous posts – Page, great in the studio, sloppy live. Townshend – magnificent songwriter/arranger not so lead guitar. I’d leave out Santana and include David Gilmour who IMHO is not only a better allround player, but when you include his impact/songwriting etc. is way ahead of Carlos. But as always these lists are purely subjective – but make for good debate!

Decent list…although I am still waiting for someone to have the balls not to automatically put Hendrix at the top of all such lists. Personally I’d put him “mid pack” at best, with Blackmore at the the top of the list. I also think Vivian Campbell (Dio, Whitesnake) and Mick Box (Uriah Heep) should be on the list – and that to make room for them, Winter and Santana should not be there.

Arik, I agree with you.
Revolutionizing guitar playing from 1966-1970 by Hendrix, does not make him a virtuoso, a classical, talentated and a clean guitar player as Blackmore is.
The list is almost perfect, with the exception that Page is overrated as lead guitar player. He is so sloppy.
Clapton plays always the same licks over and over again. Peraphs the most overrated guitarist in the world.
What J.D. Stevens is talking about. Pete Townshend? This is about lead guitarist, the best in the world. Pete can not lead to save his life, with all due respect for him and Who that is great band.

Well, first of all, I would say that we must first identify the timeline of classic rock music.
How early are we considering the music to be classic and up to when we draw the line?
Looking back 20 some add years ago, during the 80’s there were a lot of great guitartists
that ever picked up a guitar and play timeless and masterpiece riffs, tunes, solos, etc.
that until now, it is still a big influence for many musician out there especially those who
are highly interested in playing guitar. However, the list were categorized as the early
pioneers of classic rock music and they were the first to be known worldwide. There is
still more musicians to be considered.

Another fine article, Steve. Glad to see you rank Carl Palmer so highly. His drumming is phenomenal. I would’ve put Phil Collins on the list, even if only Honorable Mention. There aren’t many drummers out there whose sound the average man-on-the-street can instantly recognize. Maybe he just did too many sappy pop tunes along the way to qualify anymore. Surprised you didn’t include Charlie Watts, but only because every music writer alive seems to list him among the all-time greats (I’ve always found his playing fairly boring). Absolutely shocked Roger Taylor isn’t on here, but you’ve atoned for this and your other past sins of omission with choice #7. Rock On!

I greatly enjoyed the article! An argument can be made for the inclusion of Bill Bruford
in the top ten. Bruford not only performed in Yes;his percussion also provided the foundation for King Crimson and a version of Genesis.In addition, his technical prowess has made him a legitimate drummer in the jazz and jazz-rock worlds.Terry Sullivan of Renaissance,who shared the same drum instructor as Bruford, is a greatly overlooked drummer that incorporated much tuned percussion in classic rock.

A great read, Steve. Bass players don’t get written up in “Best Of” lists to the same degree as Guitarists, Drummers or Vocalists. I heartily agree with most of these choices, but leaving out Geddy Lee is a crime worthy of 40 lashes. I’d also like to cast my vote for Dee Murray. An oft-overlooked bassist, he WAS the Elton John sound. Just take a listen to the sound of the albums released after he left the band (Rock of The Westies & Blue Moves) and compare to the sound on those that came before to see what I mean. I’m also a sucker forTiran Porter ….

This sounds a hell of a lot more interesting than your usual vampire fare…and seems light years away from something as nauseating as “Twilight”.

“Oldboy” is an underrated classic (maybe it’s not underrated? Not sure about that one), so I’m curious to see what the director does with a supernatural subject like vampires. The story definitely sounds unique, even with the “jarring” aspect of it, I think i’ll manage and find something to like about it. Korean vampire films are a rarity indeed!

Great review Ron, I’ll have to check this out asap.

Clapton is a great guitarist, but he’s a bit overrated. Same with Angus Young and Slash. Tony Iommi and Mike McCready are both better contemporaries of each, IMO.

While I agree with everyone on the list I would have Clapton #2,and Stevie Ray #3. Close enough though.Great that you added Johnny Winter, a sometimes forgotten classic rock guitarist. Duane Allman as a honorable mention is also a nice touch. A great talent cut down in the prime of his life.Imagine going to the Beacon and seeing him with the Brothers !!

With all due respect, I beg to differ concerning “You’re Not Shaken” being forgettable. It is the first single off Phil Stacey’s new cd, which is an exciting thing for a Phil Stacey fan. And for the Christian, it is a very timely message, to paraphrase Phil’s own words about the song, of being able to hang in there, amidst the trials faced, because God is unshaken and can pull one through. The Christian audience is a pretty large one, so there is no concern for the limit of the audience, in my opinion. Like Phil himself has said, the album is like a series of mini-sermons with the theme that God is present in time of trouble, meaning that there is Someone out there you can hang on to and look to in your time of need.

Wow…are you watching the same show that I’m watching?

The cast – and their chemistry – of this show is what makes it so great. I love watching their personalities and relationships slowly develop each week, and every episode leaves me wanting to see more. The Warehouse and the artifacts are interesting and fun, but it’s merely a backdrop to the characters.

Saul Rubinek is fantastic, and his character is my favorite. He’s perfectly cast as a man with a sense of a higher duty and he’s left behind any chance of a ‘normal’ life by being the custodian of the warehouse. By being the solo caretaker for so long he’s developed an idiosyncratic personality, and his dialogue interplay with the artifacts is hilarious…you have to feel for the guy.

Try going back and watching again. I fear you’ve missed something. A whole lot of something…this show is terrific!

A great review. I myself only saw this movie for the first time about a month ago (thanks Netflix!); I thought it might be old or out of date, I thought that perhaps I’d seen all of these types of scenes in other movies and that seeing their originating movie would be a let down…but that was not the case at all! Steve, your review captures the feeling I had when I saw it. The paragraph you had:

“…makes you feel Doyle’s frostbite as he waits for the villain (Rey as “Frog One”) to finish his dinner at a swanky Manhattan restaurant.”

captures it dead on, you ‘feel’ like your in the movie! Great film, your review really speaks to why it is a true classic, but as fresh as the day it was made. Thank you for another great review!

If a tenth of what was portrayed about Shirley Turner was true, she certainly was “from hell”. Spite and venom? I would say more like pain and rage and rightly so. This woman murdered his adoptive parents only child and then took out their Grandson. For such sad and crushing material Kurt Kuenne brilliantly managed to make a documentary of how love and friendship CAN conquer evil. Had it not been for this documentary I question if the Bagby’s would still be here.

I’m really hoping that something works out between Adam Lambert and Queen – whether just a one-time appearance or something longer. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up to hear him with Brian and Roger on the American Idol finale. A poll at Queenzone has the nay-sayers somewhat ahead, but there are a lot of Freddie Mercury shrines there, so it is understandable. I loved Freddie too, but he ain’t comin’ back, and Adam is the first one I’ve heard who has the voice and stage presence to recreate some of the magic. I even went to Queen Online and emailed Queen about it and hope that some others have too.

Brilliant review! I adore this film (although it did take a few viewings). I like how it is such a departure from the series and the characters they played. Music wise, I have to agree that it is some of their best material. “Circle Sky” is the best version recorded (accept no other version than the live one! The other are so lacking without Peter’s awesome bass) and “Do I Have To Do This All Over Again” is a great example of what a good musician and writer Peter actually was, it’s a shame he departed the group after this. “Porpoise Song” is one of my all time favourite Monkees tunes, Micky’s vocals are so hauntingly beautiful on it.

Anyway, I agree with everything you said wholeheartedly! Everyone should try and watch this film, even if you’re not a huge Monkees fan

i planned on seeing this movie…but now i kind of don’t want to. the Jennifer Tilly school of voice acting?! that’s just asking to get something thrown at you. lol her voice can’t be as annoying as Sean Avery is to the rest of the NHL…it’s impossible.

i’m still willing to give it a shot, however. my brother loved it, but then again he’s a transformers fanboy…

Nice straight forward review Patrick. Well its good that Nintendo kept to its roots, but much like the previous Mario Kart installments, the games lack enough innovation to wow their now older audiences. I’m sure the kids of today, that are our age when we picked up the original punch out, are loving it as much as we did back in those days. I just wish Nintendo thought about making the games targeted at our age group. =/

Out of all the above, I only caught Santana. I did, though, manage to see the Grateful Dead at MSG quite a few times when Jerry was still with us. And, as I mentioned to you, I catch the Allman Brothers when ever and where ever they are in NY or NJ. Why don’t you write a comparison of the Grateful Dead (now, The Dead) concert-going experience with and without Jerry and the Allman Brothers with and without Dicky Betts? I’d love to see the response!

Well, I have to generally disagree with your overall thesis. Sure, the lyrics are sugar coated and shallow, but why shouldn’t they be? Does every band need to be U2? If you take this album for what it is (a power pop throw back perfect for top down summer driving), not what you WANT it to be, then it succeeds fairly well.
