Second Season of ‘True Blood’ Continues to Bite us in All the Right Places

TruebloodintertitleEpisode Commentary: “Keep This Party Going.”

This show is damn good.

In its first season, “True Blood” delivered excellent episodes week after week, and it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change any time soon. Even in an episode without exorbitant amounts of sex and violence–hopefully next week–True Blood’s wonderful story telling, compelling characters and intriguing mystery, better yet mysteries, are more than enough to keep fans satisfied.

Beginning where last episode left off, we’re immediately thrust back into the lives of the citizens of the fictional Bon Temps, Louisiana.

Now that the new vampire Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll, My Name is Earl) is going to be living with her creator Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer, The Starter Wife) Sookie Stackhouse, played by the adorable Anna Paquin, (The Piano, X-Men) takes a forward interest in helping her boyfriend help his house guest adapt to her new lifestyle, while trying to maintain a human side so many vampires lose.

While Sookie is doing her best to help the two vampires, her naive, dimwitted brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten, Summerland) is off at the Light of Day camp formed by the fang hating church, The Fellowship of the Sun. It would seem from past episodes, the Fellowship has plans in stored for Jason and will be a major influence on him in upcoming episodes.

Elsewhere, Lafayette Reynolds, played spectacularly by Juilliard alumni Nelsan Ellis (The Soloist), is trying his best to stay alive in the basement of Fangtasia, while his cousin Tara Thorton (Rutina Wesley, Numb3rs) figures out what to do next with her life and if she should get involved with Benedict “Eggs” Talley (Mechad Brooks, Dollhouse)

Like any good mystery,” True Blood” teases its viewers with little hints here and there while withholding enough to keep us coming back for more. Throughout the episode, the writers show bits and pieces of who the seductive Maryann Forrester (Michelle Forbes, Battlestar Galactica, Wonderland) really is, though what her motives, as well as what she wants from Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell, Going to California, Alien Vs Predator: Requiem) are still unknown.

The only puzzling part about this episode is the lack of information on the murder of Miss Jeanette. It seemed as if it would be a major plot point during the second season, not just because it was the first scene in the season premiere, but because of the strange and gruesome way she was murdered. Not a big deal as there is plenty of season left, but still strange nonetheless.

As the second season comes into its own, the series continues to prove that it is one of the best shows on television. With superb acting to go along with the excellent storytelling, “True Blood” is the must watch show of the summer. If you’re not watching yet, hurry before you miss anymore of the sexy and gory fun.

As an avid doer of nothing, I have dedicated my entire life to knowing every line of Seinfeld as well as most from The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park and Scrubs. I’m not ashamed to admit I was teary eyed during the Scrubs finale, and bawled uncontrollably the first time I saw the Futurama episode “Jurassic Bark.” When not watching obscene amounts of television, and by obscene I mean watching the entire first season of Battlestar Galactica in one day, I’m listening to an ungodly amount music. Classic rock and classic/alternative/underground hip-hop are my genres of choice. I can go from listening to “Stairway To Heaven” from the, well if you don’t know who that’s from that’s your problem, to Big L’s “Devil’s Son” back to “I Am The Walrus.” I also absolutely love movies and video games. The Godfather Parts I and II and Lord of the Rings (a trilogy I have watched in one day) are my favorite movies, while GTA San Andreas, God of War, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Metal Gear Solid 4 are my favorite games. Besides entertainment, I am completely in love with sports. I love both the Jets and Giants, though I lean more towards the Jets, and I unequivocally bleed the Mets’ Blue & Orange. David Wright, Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran are my Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Citi Field is my Vatican. I must say, I look forward to forcing my thoughts and opinions upon you. Don’t worry though, they will soon become your own. And yes, I do have a tendency to overwrite.
