Staying Within Your Budget

WE-TV’s new wedding show, “Rich Bride, Poor Bride” may not be the flashiest of its offerings of this genre, but combining the comedic elements of “Bridezillas” and some of the warmness of “My Fair Wedding,” it ends up being mildly entertaining and enjoyable.

For men that can’t take the overall bias of “Bridezillas,” this show pays more attention to the wishes of the men getting married than any other show on the channel. While the women on the show thus far have proven that they are indeed the bosses of their relationships, the men at least have a say in the things that occur and aren’t just along for the ride. Because of this, it may be the most enjoyable show on the channel for anyone with more testosterone in their body than estrogen.

While that will keep men happily watching, this show is great for couples planning their big day. Seeing the wedding being put together piece by piece, you never know what the couple’s actual budget is until the end of the show. A nice twist at the end, the conclusion of the show will have you guessing how much everything costs, feeling like an episode of “The Price is Right.” Seeing how much everything costs at the end, the show is more about the relationship and the choices they have to make to ensure their big day goes smoothly than anything else. As a result, it’s educational in a way that is impossible to deny.

Through this, the show is able to attract an audience with its niche demographic and those who want to be educated in the ways of wedding planning. It also maintains a hearty blend of fun and seriousness, making it a show that can be enjoyed by pretty much anybody.

Sprinkled in between the show are testimonials of older couples that look back on their wedding days. In the bottom left hand corner, the cost of their wedding soon appears, usually a fraction of what the wedding being planned costs, making you wonder if the key to a long marriage is love or an expensive wedding. Nevertheless, they do a solid job at breaking up the episode and providing a nice parallel to the present.

Overall, by molding some of the successful elements of their other shows, WE-TV has created something that is ultimately better than the sum of its parts and a nice way to spend an hour on Sunday night.
