Imagine a life filled with luxury, comfort, and money. There are no worries as you go to work everyday and support your family. Then, one day, everything comes crashing down because of an economy that is quickly declining, causing a recession, and worst of all, people losing their jobs. The scary thing is that no one is safe, not even the employees who have been working for thirty years in the same company.
“The Company Men” shows the dark side of how bad the economy is today, making this film very enjoyable and nervous at the same time. Filled with an all star-cast, this film displays a great vision, and supreme acting as we journey into the lives of people who have been fired from their jobs and their struggles to find work again.
Bobby Walker, Ben Affleck [“The Town”] has a great job and is living the American dream. He has the perfect family, a brand new Porsche, and plenty of money to support his family. When corporate downsizing leaves him and co-workers Phil Woodward, Chris Cooper and Gene McClary, jobless, the three men are forced to re-define their lives. Walker soon finds himself in a position to work for his sarcastic brother in law as a hard-working carpenter, which does not play to his executive skill set, and comes to the realization that there is more to life than chasing a bigger and better deal.
“The Company Men” is a smart film in the sense that it shows the struggles of the unemployed and their struggles in how tough it is to find a job that would make them as much money as they did before; for others though, the problem is finding a job in general. It is a scary situation when you work for a corporate giant, making a ton of money and then walk into work one day to come to realize that you no longer have work.
This film also shows a positive light in that if you are struggling to find a job in this economy, you can not give up. There will be times where you will be feeling depressed, and frustrated, but as tough as it is you need get back on the horse and fight off the struggles that many people face in today’s society which includes finding a job.
“The Company Men” is a film that displays a brilliant part of starting from scratch and building your way up to the top while being unemployed, as showed in the end of the film. If you have experience, and have been working in a specific type of field for a long time, even if you are a corporate business man, you build your business from scratch by bringing in a bunch of unemployed co-workers that are experienced and putting together a successful team that can bring the business to the top.
If nothing else, you’ll get a solid film out of the experience.
