Scholastic’s Next Big Thing

Scholastic will soon be unveiling one of its newest and cutest editions to childrens’ bookshelves this May entitled, “Marty McGuire,” by Kate Messner and illustrated by Brian Floca. The chapter book, suggested for children ages six-nine, is the first in a series and introduces readers to a fun and relateable story of a young, precocious girl and her adventures in the third grade.

When Marty, a girl whose hobbies include playing in the mud and catching frogs with the boys, learns that she has been given the lead in the class play, “The Frog Prince,” she wonders if she is right for the part. She is reluctant to accept her role, for she feels she is not the typical pretty princess. However, with a few lessons in acting from a special teacher, Marty learns that she can be the most fantastic princess, even with muddy sneakers and torn jeans.

Children will love this heartwarming story about Marty’s ability to stay true to who she is, and never give up. Along the way, Marty learns about both the power of friendship, as well as imagination- some of the most important life lessons elementary school readers will never forget. She is a lovable and a well-written character. Marty and her classmates are funny, sweet, and incredibly accessible to kid readers. Her third grade woes will remind readers of how sometimes even our biggest challenges, such as the lead in a school play, can be one of the most wonderful and unforgettable life lessons.

Marty McGuire will be a sure hit with young readers everywhere. The book is well written by Messner, packed with humor, grace and that special touch of childhood innocence that will make the book a fun page turner for kids. Floca’s illustrations are a great accompaniment, wonderfully depicting the characters and plot. The two make a great team and the next installments of the series will definitely be looked forward to.

Maria Sica teaches Middle School English, tutors college students, and has recently completed her Master’s Degree in English Education at Brooklyn College. She loves keeping busy, yet does not mind the occasional moments when she can catch up with a good book wrapped in a fleece blanket, and drinking a cup of tea (which may sound boring to her friends and boyfriend, but she doesn’t care). She has always loved to read and write at an early age. She will be the first to admit that she is a nerd-and loves anything sci-fi such as the X-files. She is also a fan of Harry Potter and Spongebob Squarepants, and counts them as her favorite Heros next to Wonder Woman and Marty McFly. However, unlike most nerds, she can’t do math if her life, or yours, depended on it.
