Review Fix Exclusive: Q & A with Abused Romance Frontman Meir Yaniv

Check out this exclusive Q & A with Abused Romance Frontman Meir Yaniv, who discusses his influences, the band’s new album and current tour with Egypt Central.

Review Fix: What does it feel like touring with Egypt Central?

Meir Yaniv: It’s awesome. This is our second tour with Egypt Central and we are all really good friends on and off the road. We are both very energetic bands on stage, so it makes the nights really wild for the crowds.

Review Fix: If someone never listened to Abused Romance, how would you describe the band’s sound?

Yaniv: I would say listening to Abused Romance is like driving really fast on a highway with a beautiful girl playing with your hair. Our sound is super-energetic and heavy but also very melodic and poetic.

Review Fix: Your voice has several different layers. Sometimes, you come across soft, almost like a balladeer. At other times, you’re a bit rougher. Why is that?

Yaniv: As you mentioned, my voice is very diverse. I can go real soft or rough. When I sing I just get into the song and the lyrics that I write with everything I’ve got and the tone that comes out is exactly the way I feel in that moment. I am never trying to sound heavy or light, I just let out what I feel.

Review Fix: Who influences you?

Yaniv: I am very influenced by Brandon Boyd form Incubus, James Hetfield from Metallica, Jared Leto from 30 Seconds to Mars, Mike Patton from Faith No More and Elvis.

Review Fix: How did your childhood influence you musically?

Yaniv: When I was a teenager I was introduced to Metallica and Nirvana and I just fell in love. I was playing in bands non-stop and my parents resented it. I think the fact playing music and getting to Abused Romance was a rough and bumpy road made me extremely determined to make it and be an artist. My youth developed my hunger and the love for what I do today.

Review Fix: What are your long-term goals with the band?

Yaniv: We are determined to be a band for a long time and play to as many people we can on the planet. We love this life as musicians and as touring artists and we want to write more and tour more.

Review Fix: Name a few bands you listen to that your fans might be surprised you listen to.

Yaniv: I listen to a wide range of music from Pop to Metal. Right now some of the surprising artists I’m into are Jessie J, Godjira, Elvis, Katy Perry, Drake and Beyonce.

Review Fix: What was it like filming the video for “Overcome”?

Yaniv: Filming videos is one of my favorite things to do because we get to rock out with no care of how we sound so we just go wild. “Overcome” was shot with Robbie Starbuck who is an incredible director. He was into shooting the video based on the concept we came up with so it was awesome to see our music and our story line come to life together. This video is everything we imagined it to be. I love the scene where I’m with my evil double!

Review Fix: What is your favorite track on “Shine”?

Yaniv: The live performance of “Vaporize” from our forthcoming version of the album: Shine – Special Addition due out June 14th.

Review Fix: What do you think you have to do for yourself to achieve your dreams in music?

Yaniv: To be true to my music and myself and to work hard and put my heart and soul into Abused Romance. All the success we have gained and future success is out of my hands.

Review Fix: Is there anything else you’d like to tell your fans or any potential new ones?

Yaniv: Our album is out and is online for free on our website www.abusedromance.com. We want everyone to download it and enjoy the music. Also, we are coming out with Shine – Special Addition, which is a double album with a live show from the Viper Room in Hollywood and acoustic versions of two songs. I also want to thank all our fans for supporting our band. This would never happen without you.
