Trey Songz, Alexandra Daddario Star in ‘Chainsaw Massacre’ Reboot

Trey Songz is set to play a lead role in yet another reboot of the 1974 classic horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this time in 3D, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Grammy-nominated R&B artist will star as the male lead and boyfriend alongside the film’s lead actress, Alexandra Daddario. Chainsaw 3D is set for release on October 4, 2012 through Lionsgate.

Songz, who makes his big screen debut in Chainsaw 3D, is otherwise known for top ten hits like “Girl Tonight” and “Can’t Help But Wait” as well as the hit “Bottoms Up” from his most recent album, last year’s Passion, Pain and Pleasure. This fall, Songz plans to release a new album. He has also done ads for Roc A Wear Clothing and Kodak.

Though Songz is new to headlining a cast, he’s had previous experience playing himself on The Mo’Nique Show and ABC Family’s Lincoln Heights and had a small part in last year’s Christian film Preacher’s Kid. Chainsaw 3D will give Songz the chance to grow in his acting career, and the producers hope to give the other fresh actors a big break as well.

Tobe Hooper’s original 1974 film about teenagers being terrorized by a cannibalistic Texan family will see a makeover with the addition of 3D effects. The last remake of the series in 2003 gave villain Leatherface, inspired by real-life serial killer Ed Gein, a new generation to terrify and grossed over $100 million.

Some of Hooper’s original cast members will also make cameos in the new film, according to a Lionsagate press release. Notably, Gunnar Hansen, the first Leatherface, will make an appearance, though his original role will be taken over by newcomer Dan Yeager. The 1974 lead actress Marilyn Burns will also appear as the role of Verna Carson, and the original Grandfather, John Dugan, will reprise his role.

Directed by John Lussenhop (Takers), Chainsaw 3D is a collaboration between Carl Mazzocone and Mark Burg of the Saw franchise, Lionsgate and Nu Image. Bloody Disgusting reported last year that the film begins just as the original left off before flashing forward 35 years. The Lionsgate press release revealed that Daddario plays Heather Miller, who makes a trip to Texas to collect her inheritance—which also includes her cousin, Leatherface.

The reboot begins filming later this month in Shreveport, Louisiana.
