WWE RAW Coverage: More Soap Opera Than Suplex

In the wake of CM Punk’s win over John Cena for the WWE title in Chicago on Sunday, the WWE held a World Title tournament.

Sounds great, right?

Not when the tournament itself was all a sham, a masquerade for another storyline to take over the show.

Vince McMahon is out of the WWE…for now.

After an emotional yet cornball-esque promo between Triple H, the new boss and Vinnie Mac, Cena gets to keep his job and McMahon got the pink slip.

It’ll match is pink blazer perfectly.

However, this development didn’t save an otherwise listless show.

Plain and simple, RAW has no champion and is without Punk, their best heel.

Something needs to be fixed and soon.

Matches:

The Miz vs. Alex Riley: A bland match that was light on action. When Riley went for his DDT finisher, The Miz was able to counter and hit the Skull-Crushing finale for the win. Overall, this match was nothing special and ultimately, it hurts their current feud, considering how a hurt Miz took out Riley so easily.

R-Truth vs. Jack Swagger: Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler called R-Truth’s win an upset, but only in Bizarro World. Swagger is a great athlete, but isn’t nearly as polished a competitor as Truth. That was obvious in this match that was better overall than The Miz/Riley encounter. Countering a poorly executed ankle lock into a roll-up, Truth secured the win, but left the fans unhappy. Again, like the first match, there wasn’t much going on in the ring.

Kofi Kingston vs. Alberto Del Rio: After another counter of a finisher, Kingston rolled up Del Rio for the win. Again, it was a pretty routine match.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rey Mysterio: A quick match that ended after Mysterio hit the 619 on Ziggler. To see a promising United States champ beaten so easily by a cruiserweight can’t be good for Ziggler. The fact that the match was void of action as well proves the WWE doesn’t know what to do with him.

The Bella Twins, Maryse, Rosa Mendez, Tamina, Melina and Alicia Fox vs. Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim, Beth Phoenix, Eve Torrez, Natty Niedhart, AJ and Kaitlyn: A match that lasted barely a minute after Phoenix hit the Glam Slam on Rosa Mendez. In the end, it was a complete waste of time.

The Miz vs. Kofi Kingston: Just when it looked like Kingston was about to steal the match, The Miz hit the skull-crushing finale to advance to the finals of the World Title Tournament.

Rey Mysterio vs. R-Truth: Best match of the night with plenty of near-falls and suspense. However, the finish, essentially the same as the one that got Mysterio the win earlier in the night, felt too inorganic and takes the air out of Truth’s push. Had Truth won, it would have been interesting to see two heels fight for the title.
