Review Fix Exclusive: Daniel Malakai Cabrera Talks ‘Two Bellmen’

Review Fix chats with “Two Bellmen” director Daniel Malakai Cabrera, who discusses the new short film, breaking down the inspirations behind it and telling us who will enjoy it most. A witty combination of humor and non-stop action, it’s definitely not your typical short film.

Review Fix: What was the inspiration for this film?

Daniel Malakai Cabrera: The main inspiration for this film was to try and create a fun short story that showcased the amazing group of talent we have in the Substance Over Hype family and take advantage of the beautiful setting we had in using the JW Marriott at LA Live.

Review Fix: What was the atmosphere on the set like?

Cabrera: The atmosphere on set was very focused with a few fun moments.  It was very exciting to execute certain dance, stunt, and acting moments but it was also challenging to work as fast as we needed to in order to get all scenes and balance the logistics of filming in an open hotel.  We went in with an ambitious shoot schedule.  We go for tricks and stunts that take a lot of time; and while that gives us the chance to try and amaze people, it can also put us in a position of racing the clock.

Review Fix: Why do you think someone should see this film?

Cabrera: My hope is that any viewer will find a few spectacular moments in this film to thoroughly entertain, and hopefully one or two that make them laugh or smile.

Review Fix: What films do you think it borrows its feel from?

Cabrera: Maybe a random mix of “Fifth Element,” “21 Jump Street” and “Rush Hour.”

Review Fix: What are your hopes for it?

Cabrera: I hope this films garners more appreciation for the amazing individuals and talents that helped bring this to life.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy it the most?

Cabrera: I think people who enjoy action comedy are most likely to enjoy this.   We are very inspired by providing entertainment like Jackie Chan provides and hope it appeals to that type of fan.

Review Fix: How do you want this film to be remembered?

Cabrera: We would love for this film to be remembered as a unique and special blend of amazing.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Cabrera: We are writing more short films, skits, and a feature or two amidst music and live performance projects.
