Fear the Walking Dead Episode Commentary: ‘So Close, Yet So Far’

This episode of “Fear the Walking Dead” packed a little more punch than the first episode, but it’s still not enough to entertain.

“So Close, Yet So Far” still builds up a storyline of the virus outbreak that takes place in Los Angeles. So far, the suspense is extremely slow and the characters continue to make you want to pull your hair out. This has to be the only show on Television where all of the characters annoy you. The acting is putrid, and they seem to be running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

To make matters worse, each of the characters suspect that there is trouble on the horizon, and there is still a lack of preparation as they try to discover what is happening while almost getting themselves killed in the process. When they finally have an idea of what’s causing mayhem in L.A., they seem to procrastinate and remain in harms way. It seems the subject of police brutality plays a major role in this episode, and why not? it is a hot topic in this country. However, the way it is portrayed towards the audience is lame and completely uncreative as the several police officers on occasions have to put down people who are infected by this mystery virus that has plagued the city of Los Angeles. To top it off, this causes outrage in the city streets.

As far as the main characters, Madison, Travis, Nick, Christopher and Alicia are concerned, they each give a reason for the audience to despise them. If you thought Andrea from “The Walking Dead” was a nuisance, these characters are by far worse. To be fair, Madison is going through a lot, even before the outbreak, she has her hands full with dealing with her son Nick, who is a drug addict. Both of her kids do not seem to be bright, her daughter Madison especially. Her teenage, mad at the world attitude wants to make you change the channel whenever she is on screen.

It seems that this episode took a page out of the Walking Dead video game series as Travis, along with his ex-wife and son, Christopher decide to stay in a barber shop, while riots break out on the street, and Los Angeles becomes infested with zombies. Overall, the suspense in this episode was dull, and the character development will make you wish that this series will go in a completely different direction thus far.

The good news is that we will have to wait two weeks until this show comes back. Maybe this mini hiatus will make the audience forget how horrifically bad the first two episodes of this new series have been.
