Review Fix Exclusive Northlane’s Josh Smith Talks ‘Node,’ Tour and More

Review Fix chats with Northlane’s Josh Smith who discusses the band’s new album and their headlining tour with guests Like Moths To Flames, In Hearts Wake and Oceans Ate Alaska.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Josh Smith: Jon and Alex met through a mutual friend and traded riffs. They demoed our first song “the deadmines” and recruited me on guitar. Then we picked up Nic after our first tour because his other band split up, and finally Marcus was selected through a youtube audition process.

Review Fix: What makes you guys special?

Smith: We are sharing a positive message and play heavy music with a lot of ambiance.

Review Fix: Who influences you the most musically?

Smith: Incubus, Chad smith, cloudkicker.

Review Fix: What makes “Node” a special album?

Smith: It’s a record about being the change you want to see in the world.

Review Fix: How does it feel to be in the States touring?

Smith: We love being able to travel the world playing our music and sharing it with people. It always feels at home to be in the states.

Review Fix: What’s the standout song on this album? Why?

Smith: I think every song has a unique quality to it on this record. I really like weightless because it’s fairly different to anything we’ve done before.

Review Fix: Is there a story behind it? How was it written?

Smith: It came from a few small ideas and blossomed into a song. I wrote the vocals about how the song made me feel when I listened to the instrumental version of it for the first time.

Review Fix: How do you want this album to be remembered?

Smith: It’s the first record with our new vocalist, Marcus. And it represents a landmark change in our sound. It will be remembered as a turning point for us.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Smith: Right now we are touring Europe and then Australia as a headline for Node, then North America later this year and soundwave festival early next year
