Review Fix Exclusive: Spylights’ Vincent Giovanni Talks New EP And More

Review Fix chats with the Spylights’ Vincent Giovanni, who discusses the band’s new EP, detailing its goals as well as his creative process and goals for the rest of the year.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Vincent Giovanni: I started writing and recording music myself in late 2014 after the parting of my last band. After that I just kept writing fueled by self-determination, abandonment, and the love for composing and creating. When I realized that it was going to be real hard to find the right crew of available and like-minded musicians locally, I just went ahead and started doing all the writing and playing myself.  Now that there are a couple of talented musicians on board with me, we should have the live band assembled and ready soon.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Giovanni: Usually, I get inspired to write from things that are either very nostalgic or full of positivity. The fire can get started and kicked off by anything randomly for me like good music, video games, film, memories, philosophy, gratefulness, cartoons, or even my dog. The process can start with just a single melody that’s stuck in my head, or it can spawn from just playing any instrument I am feeling like using the voice of to get the idea across. There is really no set formula, because it changes every time depending on my mood or vision for the song. Next is finding a smooth cohesiveness between all the instruments and deciding which vibes or melodies that I want to take precedence for each part. After it all comes together and I start to feel like what’s in my head is being transposed correctly, I then start tightening up parts, looking for the areas that don’t feel right still or need work. Regret is something that can really haunt an artist if these processes are rushed or forced.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Giovanni: There are many different feels and moods throughout the songs I write that I am very proud of. I really hate to pick just one standout song, because different things can standout more to different people. I originally was going to name the debut record the Empath Ep, after the song called the Empath. That song really explains my true nature as a person and my thoughts and feelings about the world today. It is the final song on the Ep.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Giovanni: The goal, for now, is to release the EP, then practice as much as we can as a band to get tight for playing live and touring. I will be starting production of the full-length Spylights album at the beginning of 2018!

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Giovanni: Well the reason I wanted to get into this in the first place was because of how much music really affected me mentally and emotionally even at a young age. I just want to write songs that people can really feel!  It doesn’t matter whether it’s making someone’s bad times easier, or enhancing their good times. I want to connect with people’s emotions and really move them.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Giovanni: The next things on the horizon for Spylights is playing some live shows, making a music video or two, fortifying up, and preparing for the full-length album that will be released in 2018.
