Peasant Moon Songs: Our Timing Was Wrong EP Review: Soulful and Rich Country

Country music is all about story. While the voices and music are important to any genre, a premium is always on storytelling. Peasant Moon Songs’ new EP “Our Timing Was Wrong,” although more folksy than country, manages to combine wonderful and deep music with the tapestry of lyrics that invoke the notion of love and self-discovery. Simply put, it’s an old-school EP, with plenty to hold on to.

The best way to describe Sydney based singer-songwriter Harvey Russell and long time collaborator Josie Rothwell is real. Discussing love and life, they pull no punches in this five-track EP. In the flavor of The Civil Wars, Johnny Cash meets Jim Croce they give you stories that’ll quickly grab a piece of your soul. On the title track, “Our Timing Was Wrong,” Rothwell discusses a marriage lacking the substance it needs to survive:

People saw the making of a humble union

But we were just faking, forever forsaken

Vows they were written, correspondence undertaken

Now and forever you will not be mine

It’s moments like this that absolutely cement the duo as a wonderful pair of storytellers.

On later tracks like “Party,” the two manage to combine their voices in a sweet harmonization lesson- a track that deserves to be on mainstream radio, even if it’s a tad on the slower side. You can’t escape from. You’ve all experienced the moments encapsulated in many of these songs, but “Party” may be the one that most will connect with.

But away from the lyrics and their vocal prowess, again, it’s the music that ties it all together. The musicianship away from the duo is super powerful. The trio of Aaron Langman (pedal steel, electric guitar), Jonathan Kelly (bass) and Rich Burrows(drums) create an environment ripe for tapping your feet. On “Back in Time,” the harmonica, percussion and guitar are blended beautifully providing a warm backdrop to the scenes being set.

Thanks to this wonderful combination of stories and tunes,
Peasant Moon becomes a band that’ll steal your heart in a very short time.
