Review Fix Exclusive: Charly Talks Goals And Future

Review Fix chats with singer Charly, who discusses her upcoming EP and goals for the future.

Review Fix: How did this project start?

Charly: This project is reflecting one part of my work: the film composer. After a year in a Music Production Program at The Academy of Art University of San Francisco, I realized that I wanted to create music for films on the side of my bands. This EP « Film Scores » is the result of songs I composed for several short movies these past years.

Then I met an incredible music composer named Peace S. Nistades who I did an internship with. He is the one who encouraged me and helped me to release this EP. Gerhard Westphalen mixed and mastered the project. This EP wouldn’t be out without these two talented guys.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Charly: Well, it depends on the filmmaker I am working with and the alchemy there is between us. Sometimes, I like first to hear what is his/her point of view on the film story, and what he/she has in mind for the music. Then, I read the script and pitch the ideas I got for the music. It can also be the opposite.

Some filmmakers have really specific ideas of what they want, and how long the music should be, etc.  Some others give me total freedom, which can be tricky too. You never know where you are going and if the music you create serves the movie the way the filmmaker would like you to serve it.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Charly: I would say the most accessible is « Another Day, Another Lie » since it gets the format of a pop song. The one who sounds like a real film score would be « The Boy in The Mirror ». I think it is my favorite. It gets a lot of different parts and dynamics.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?

Charly: Make sure to still be alive in 2019!

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Charly: If it can communicate feelings to people and maybe inspire them to create stuff I would be really happy.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Charly: I am now working on my solo artist EP. It should be ready in one or two months now. I am really excited about this project because I am working on it with Eric Reymond, bass player of « Charly&Faust » and Coralie Hervé, drummer of « Charly&Faust », one of my other bands. We are working pretty well together and it is an honor for me to have them part of this new project.
