Oddnote: Mystified Single Review: A Charismatic Throwback

Channeling the Seattle-styled grunge song that made bands like Nirvana legends, Nashville’s Oddnote have a more than solid throwback piece in “Mystified,” that will not only take you back to that era but make you a fan of the future of the genre.

The success of the track is thanks to the entire band. While frontman Arman Asadsangabi plays his part with his charismatic vocal performance, Matthew Millstein and Nick Huff’s drum and bass work keep the song strong throughout, while the opening guitar riff and by Joseph Downing and Rocko Beall make the song instantly approachable and will connect that ‘90s grunge audience.

However, the musicianship plays almost second fiddle to the lyrics. Clear and easy to understand thanks to Asadsangabi, it’s an anthem to a rough relationship-

“Sometimes I’m mystified by how we lie until we die
I feel it’s fine till I, find a light that’s lost its life
I wanna know, wanna know your confessions
I want it all, want to know your decision
I want it now ~ I need it now.”

Truth be told, the song was inspired by Asadsangabi’s own relationship issues.

“I wrote Mystified in the spring of 2018 while going through some rough patches in my relationship,” he said. “It just so happened that the song became more of an introspective outlook on the world we’re living in today, and with that.. everything built into it just slowly came perfectly together.”

That ability to share your life and deliver it musically is what every musician tries to do, but it rarely ever ends up as a success. For such a young band to be able to communicate an issue like this and do it through alternative rock is exactly what the genre needs. While the Grand Old Opry when they think of Nashville, this band has the potential to help change that.
