Tom Clancy’s The Division: Extremis Malis #1 Review: For the Hardcore Clancy Fan

While Tom Clancy tales have traversed all forms of media and “The Division” is a hot commodity right now, anyone expecting anything awesome from “Tom Clancy’s The Division: Extremis Malis” written by Christofer EmgÃ¥rd with art by Fernando Baldó should look elsewhere.

During a mission in New York City, Division Agent Caleb Dunne’s partner is killed by an unknown masked female. What is supposed to be a revenge for a fallen comrade story turns into something that may go a lot deeper than that. It’s the typical Tom Clancy “Division” story featuring “Division” agents and counter agents. It’s not terrible writing, it’s just the same type of plot that many people find fascinating with military intrigue and conspiracy thrown in.

It’s either you enjoy this story or you don’t. Dunn seems to be an OK a character, but he’s written like he only serves to move this type of plot along. While there are some things about him and his partner that do add some character development, the overall feel of Dunn is he’s a character.   The art is the best thing about this comic. Baldó manages to create this gritty style that’s appropriate for this type of series and even creates some nice-looking character designs. While there isn’t much that stands out, the scenes that show characters in battle are the best looking out of everything.

While the art may be nice, the story for “Tom Clancy’s The Division: Extremis Malis” is typical Tom Clancy fare that has garnered him huge fame. While it may not be for everyone, it is enjoyable for Tom Clancy fans and those who enjoy stories about special ops groups.
