Review Fix Exclusive: Hooby and the Yabbit’s Ian Hawkins Talks ‘Movietown’ And More

BReview Fix chats with Hooby and the Yabbit’s Ian Hawkins, who lets us know how the band formed and their goals for 2019.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Ian Hawkins: So I was part of a band playing all sorts of covers , Jimmy Hendrix, ZZ Top , Steely Dan , Blues Rock and Jazz but I was also writing these tunes. In the end the band quit, and I built a studio and started recording and EVENTUALLY here we are talking about it.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Hawkins: Organic possibly , I try to let things just happen. Jamming with the group is most fun, because music’s a team game i reckon, but also there is the acoustic guitar bashing it out with pen and paper stuff as well. But the best days are when it just comes, because something has inspired you, Like all the tunes on this recording.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Hawkins: On the ‘Out of Time’ release I think its Movietown, which is a blues inspired by a sign on a church I saw saying ‘Jesus loves you for 20 centuries ‘ coinciding with US/UK forces invading Afghanistan. I was thinking, yes loves good , but what about food shelter and a peaceful existence in which to pursue ones goals in life. Something denied to too many people all over the world. I wrote it in my head walking to the studio and recorded it in a couple of days. Having said that review s have favoured the more lively ‘Tea and Toast’ and ‘Freakout.’

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2019?

Hawkins: Well, I have an acoustic release more or less ready to go, another EP that needs mixing, and i need to start live rehearsals , for which I m going to need musicians, so anyone out there Interested get in touch . I am on the Facebook and there is a contact page on the web.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Hawkins: Hmmm. I suppose I just want it to move them in someway , like any writer, but if they just tap their feet that’s okay too.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Hawkins: Work, Gigs, Studio, work Gigs studio. Family. I am on tour at the moment doing bass for a friend of mine so I m looking forward to getting home and splitting a bottle or two with the missus.
